Concept Maps!!!!!

We did care plans on our patients last semester and altought I hated them there was a format. Now we have to do a Concept Map's before we even see our patient on 3 need areas. They will not show us examples or anything because"it needs to be your own" Well from reading what they want included it sounds exactly like a care plan that I am writing on plain white paper. Anyone else doing these and have they shown you examples?

We did Mind Maps last semester...is it the same thing. It's like a care plan, but you draw it. Your patient in the middle with his different problems stemming off from his body. It can be color coded according to body systems. So if he had CHF the first "bubble" off his body would be "CHF"...then in the next bubble you would list his "probable" symptoms. the 3rd bubble was our nursing intervention and our 4th bubble was the nursing diagnosis. During clinicals the next day, we would underline the symptoms that they patient actually exhibited, make any revisions etc. We had to pick 2 problems to address the night before. Any other problems I would draw "in the clouds" above my patient. Sometimes, after the clinical day, I would discover that some of those "cloud" problems were actually more important and I would revise my drawing.

Hope this makes sense. I was really not hip on doing it at first, but it kind of grew on me after awhile. And yes, they did give us a very generic sample first.

    Good luck!!

Thanks Christine, yes that is pretty much what they want!! The thing that I hate is they pick our assigned patients on Tuesday and most are gone by my thursday clinical day...so I do one on a patient and than need to do one on the new one I get.

I hear you there. We pick our patients Monday afternoons for Tuesday mornings, and I still end up having to pick new patients on Tues a.m.!!! Like my instructor says...anybody can learn how to perform the skills...but if you don't get the paperwork, you will be in a world of trouble!!

BTW--I noticed that you were from the Chicago area. I'm relocating to Lake County, IL right after graduation!!! Grew up there and I'm looking forward to getting back that way. Don't know how I'll adjust to the weather though. It was 95 where I'm at today!

    Have a good weekend.

Christine, that is exactly how we did Concept Mapping ! I tried different shapes instead of bubbles and colored pencils once in a while.. it was fun.

Yes, it will be hard to get used to again. I lived in Southern California for 4 years while my husband was in the Marine Corp and I miss the weather...I am a sun person and could care less if it snowed! I loved having a BBQ for christmas dinner!! We just didn't want our kids growing up in such a fast paced money oriented world and the kids we saw there were growing up too fast. I go back and visit friends all the time and you can't beat the weather, there is always some where to go and something to do. Althought I don't miss the traffic!!!! I lived in Laguna Niguel for awhile and than San Clemente so I wsa smack dab in the mild of San Diego and LA. My girl friend and I want to come out again Memorial Day weekend we are not sure where to stay...maybe Palm Springs...We just want it hot!! We were there last year around that time and it was only in the 70's and we want it alittle warmer. Any suggestions?
