Specializes in Hey I'm now an RN!!.

do any of you have the nursig student clipboard? with some vital info already imprinted on it?

[color=#999966]nurses' clipboard invaluble information at a glance. sturdy solar/battery calculator clip, ruler, l.o.c., formulas, vital signs, abg norms, cranial nerves, acid base balance, drug info., clock, cbc differential, infusion flowchart and more. 14" x 9".

if you have one of these, is it worth it? do you actually use it or is it just a waste?

thanks!

I used a clipboard with all that info printed on it my first semester in clinicals and then gave it up. I was always leaving it in patient's rooms, at the nurses station, etc. It was just way too much of a hassle. Now I just keep a small pad of paper and my patient care flow sheet in my pocket, along with all my other stuff (pens, calculator, scissors, RN Notes). It's much simpler and I don't have to keep track of that big clip board. I know a lot of folks like carrying a clip board, but it just didn't work for me.

Good luck! :)

That is what I was thinking also, I don't think I would be too likely to carry it!! Thanks!!

I went to Walmart a bought a clipboard with a calculator on it the opens to store papers, etc. Then I used a sharpie to write the information (like nursing calculations) that I use. It is alot cheaper than buying one that is preprinted with info that I don't need.

Specializes in MICU for 4 years, now PICU for 3 years!.

I also use just a regular, cheap clipboard. The ones that are preprinted are nice, but I think if I don't know it by now, I probably shouldn't be there in the hospital. If it's something I really just can't think of, my clinical instructors are great, and we can ask them. I like to use it, because you can take it with you into pt's rooms, along with their bedside if needbe, and you have something to write notes on. Or, if your pt. needs to sign something, or write something (we're in LTC facilities for clinical right now, and sometimes our residents need to write things for us) you have something hard to write on. If you don't need the clipboard when you go into your pt's room, you can always leave it in the wallaroo, or whatever the bedside chart is kept in. There's usually enough room for it in there.

We are not allowed to use any clip board. I keep paper (I like using index cards in pocket for notes because they are sturdy) in my pocket. Even if you leave it in the hallway it's likely to get covered with all sorts of germs you don't want to bring home. It was a good point by the teacher. I have 'RN Notes' in other pocket, lot's of info. We are told, 'bring as little as possible' for the sake of not taking the germs home.

I have the clipboard, and I really like it. I use it quite a bit for reference when doing assessments.

I tried many different "systems" in school and on the job. You really just need to find what works best for you. I found the clipboard cumbersome and I would always lose it. What I finally did was make a 4x6 notecard with standard info on it (lab values, IV drip calcs, etc). I kept it in one of my pockets. You could even laminate it so it stays nice-looking, but you may not want to in case you want to add stuff to it later on. You can get a cheap thin calculator at the dollar store to carry around in your pocket instead of having one on a clipboard.
