Clinical Points - Does your school have them?

At my school we have these things called clinical points. They are used as a 'punishment' for things like being late to a clinical, late turning in an assignment and pretty much anything else an instructor finds 'unprofessional'. The points are cumulative throughout the 2 years of schooling. There is no appeal process. If a student receives four clinical points, they are kicked out of the nursing school :angryfire

Do any of you attend a nursing school with a similar system?

Just came across this posting and found it interesting. The school I attend does not have clinical points. We have pre-clinical checkoffs that are either passed or unsatisfactory (no in between). If we pass, we attend live clinicals were we are graded daily as pass or unsatisfactory. Within that clinical rotation if we acquire three unsatisfactory days we are out. We can appeal to the board for readmission and start over, unless the unsatifactory is consider unsafe. Then we we are out without an option. Seems horifice at a glance but when considering that we are accepting the responsibility of anothers life and health, it needs to be horifice. It keeps us on our toes and concious of each decision we make during our learning process. Being late for clinicals is the instructors decision but is usually handled by having to research and report a disease or disorder of his/her choosen. Any missed clinicals require a five page research paper on the same. So my school at least gives more options than yours seems to. Hang in there -- you can make the 2 yrs. without the points adding up!

1st semester anyway, don't know about following ones, we get 14 points for showing up for class/clinical....then they are taken away if we miss, are late, don't show up in proper uniform etc.

Most nursing schools are VERY strict. Punctuality is expected. Professional behavior at all times is expected. You have to remember that the students reflect the school and the school is in the hospital at the discretion of the hospital. Two years ago, my hospital dropped sponsorship of a local OR tech program because of lack of oversight by the instructors. The students kept showing up later and later...after report. The last student was unkempt and even smelled bad when we told him not to come back. Twice this school has begged for another chance but been turned down. I don't think your instructors are being unfair, they are protecting their program!
