Back up plan

For those of you that have kids, what type of back up plan do you have for when your kids get sick?

My youngest was dx'd with pneumonia last night. We were sent home from the ER on a med cocktail of Omnicef, Albuterol and Rondec. I'm panicky b/c I start back to school on Monday and don't have a back up plan. My family lives 9 hrs away and all my friends are in school with me.

I have a neighbor w/ kids the same age as mine -- we cover for each other in emergencies.

When one of mine is too sick, tho, and I'm afraid it is something her kids haven't had and will catch, if my husband can't take off work (has surgery scheduled) the kiddo goes to work w/ him. We have a room that has been a kid's room since we opened the clinic (toys, VCR, etc.) They take a sleeping bag, pillow, food, meds, etc. We have only had to do that once or twice.

(Since they have minimal contact w/ people and he treats animals, this is not a contagion problem.)

well, my hubby stays home during day and works at night. so im in school when he's home. he's with the 2 year old and the 4 year old is in preschool. so thats not a problem.

where does your child normally go during day? ask your pediatrician if your child is still infectious even if he is on AB's for 3 days. my kids have never had PNA so i don't really know. some things are not contagious after being on the AB's for a day or two

Does the school you attend have a day care? Maybe they could take the sick child on an emergency only basis - maybe they have the space? Do any of your friends have children old enough to babysit?

Check with the dr. your child may be OK on Monday...my son has had pneumonia before and been just fine after a few days of Rx and rest.....

My husband works from home, my MIL lives less than a mile away....so that generally is my back up.

Good luck and hope little one starts feeling better

He goes to a daycare that does not allow sick kids. He seems to be doing better today although last night he was still running a low grade fever. I tend to follow the fever free for 24 hour rule about sending them to school. We should be able to get an idea for what's to come today. My fingers are crossed. The good thing is I only have my nursing class on Monday, so if need be I can miss that but Tuesday, I have classes all day.

Someone else mentioned older kids, but they all go back to school Monday too. I knew my kids would get sick at some point, but til now I've been lucky. Ughhhhhhhh

My school has daycare but they are completely full. They have a 2 year waiting list.

Just another idea... I realize school hasn't started yet, but one of my profs started us doing this, knowing many had kids that would get sick...

Get one or two "partners" that take notes and call w/ info if you can't be in class.

Where I live there is a service that comes to your house to sit. It costs $9 an hour, but they come whether your child is sick or not.

I don't like to leave my dd anywhere when she is sick.. I usually just miss class and my profs understand.

Our hospital does have a program called "cuddles and care" where they take sick kids for your while you work or go to school. It is staffed by LPNs. I have never used it but I heard it was a good program..
