Amazing Sim Lab

As I tour colleges with my daughter....I saw a state of the art sim lab and I was AMAZED at how realistic the dummies....I mean mannequins were. The sounds that infant made and the pattern of breathing caused a nursing instinct to want to respond immediately! It was almost hard to keep my hands off of it!

Are all sim labs this sophisticated? They even make up them with make-up.

I was impressed

We practiced on each other...except bed baths and foley caths. We started IV's on each other and gave each other injections.....we also inserted NGT's on each other....strictly voluntary of course....:sarcastic:.

We went to nursing homes and practiced on the living

We didn't practice much on each other... but we did go to nursing homes ?

My organization is investing in sim centers in each region. This is an exciting new growth area for nurse educators. Like eLearning, Sim education is another new frontier that has its own unique set of (evidence-based) skills and competencies for educators. We focus on multi-disciplinary education, so now we get to 'play' with physicians as well as nurses and ancillary clinical areas.

Love It!!

Sort of...ours is (recent $$$$ renovation project), but the machines break down FREQUENTLY so there was a recent sim I had to do where a professor was crouched behind the bed pretending to be the patient. It was very hard not to laugh.

The creepiest part is the pregnant sims lady looks exactly like me. I tried to convince the prof who runs the lab to put a new wig on her but no dice.

At my nursing school our mannequins are so advanced the first time I practiced putting a catheter in a male patient I literally pulled his member and orifice off in one fell swoop :roflmao:

Our "patients" are just the plain old school plastic variety

Yep ... We have those smart dummies. They give birth and all ... Lol!

The profs can even tell how fast you're pushing a drug.... O.o
