I was offered a job as an independent contractor in a prison. 35 bucks an hour. I realize I give up my rights to workmans comp. Last time I filed 1099 I ended up paying taxes instead of getting a refund. This job is also asking me to pay for my own . I will have to pay for my motel bill and other expenses, which I plan to deduct at the end of the tax year. I get the feeling I am taking a big risk, but maybe a short term monetary gain is worth the risk. Does anyone have any regrets for working independent contractor?

The dollar amount that they are quoting you is too low. As an independent contractor you need to reduce that hourly income by at least 25% to cover your taxes and workers comp insurance (you buy your own from the stste). I would research what the average wage for RNs working in the prison system (as employees) and add at least 50% to that figure in order to assure you are keeping /getting a comparable wage.

For northern California, that isn't a great wage. Add to that paying for your own housing, insurance, and taxes.....

I understand wanting to be independent, though.

Its not worth the risk. The Contract nurses working in forensics in MN make 60/hr.

What happens to you if you get hurt and can't work ever again?
