Wanted to share my wonderful moment

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I was taking one resident's blood pressure before pulling her meds. When I was done, she said, "Let me kiss you on the jaw." She did, then I kissed her on the forehead - our morning routine.

I was getting ready to go get her meds when, from across the room, I heard, "Hey, come here. Hey you!! Come over here." Now, this other resident has a reputation of being cranky and sometimes, downright mean. I've never had problems with her, but other members on the staff have.

I went over to her and kindly asked what she needed. "Do that to me," she asked. All she wanted was a kiss. My heart just melted. It made my entire day and even now, when I remember it, I smile.

When I am an old, old lady, will you be *MY* nurse???

NO - Because she's gonna be MINE.

(I think I'll end up being the crabby old goat in the corner!!)

There is no greater gift a nurse can give her patient--human contact on a very basic level. Very sweet and touching story. Makes me miss my clinical days. :p

Human contact can be as effective as any medicine on the planet. We often get residents from nursing and vets homes at our hospital. Some of them have no family - no one to visit them. Since MRSA and VRE and so on can be so prevalent in nursing homes, many of these people are in isolation. I had a man as a pt one week, who was completely alert/oriented, but bedridden from a stroke. Wife had left him, kids don't visit. He had a feeding tube, MRSA in urine, and needed a special bed to maintain his skin integrity. Me and another nurse were giving him his meds and repositioning him in bed, when my colleage asked him when the last time he had hug? The man's eyes welled up with tears, and he said that he couldn't remember - so we both gave him a big hug!! He was grateful, that he told the Doctor about it!! The Doc even approached our supervisor and commended us on remembering how important a human connection is. THANKS, AMYB FOR REMINDING US ALL HOW IMPORTANT HUMAN TOUCH IS!!! :kiss :icon_hug:

If you all keep posting these stories I'm going to have to stop looking at this board at work....I'm all welled up again. :crying2:

Poor guy; I can't imagine how good you made him feel. How sad is that.

Wow, what an awesome story!!

This is the kind of stuff that makes me so excited to become a nurse :) Having dealt with businesses ever since I started working, the first thing in my mind was "oh my god, I wonder if she'll be slapped with some sort of sexual harassment or innapropriate conduct charge!".

Isn't it sad that so much in life is about beating out the Jones' or making more money that we forget about the simple things that mean more than a million dollars to your patients? It may sound kind of "queer" for a guy to say this, but I've actually been working on the perfect cookies (and splenda-cookies in the event that I have a diabetic patient) to bring to work when I start nursing. My 12 hours will go a LOT faster if I can make those around me happy with little gifts of kindness :)

My mother's spent a good time in hospitals with everything from an aneurysm to high blood pressure issues to strokes (and pray for her if you will, now she's possibly facing cancer) and I know for a FACT that a giving and caring person for her, would LOVE to have a nice person like you for a nurse. Please don't ever stop giving of yourself. When explaining my thoughts on becoming a male nurse to some of my family, I always liked to point out that doctors heal by 'fixing', but nurses heal by NURSING the patient :)
