Verbal Job Offers...how long do you wait?

I recently interviewed for a new ER position. The interview went very well and at the end of the interviews the manager gave a soft verbal offer, including opening up her computer and telling me which orientation dates to put down on my schedule. She told me "I look forward to moving forward with you" and "You're going to be a great addition to our team" and that HR/Nurse Recruiting would follow up with me regarding specifics.

It's been 3 days and I haven't heard from the hospital again. How long would you wait until you called Nurse Recruiting to inquire about the job?

Part of it is that I'm very nervous about telling my current job I'm leaving/want to stay per diem. A *lot* of nurses are leaving and I'm worried there won't be a per diem position left if it takes much longer. Part of it is that I want to work there and want the offer in writing already!

How long should I wait?!?!

I would go ahead and follow up now.

A formal HR offer typically doesn't happen until after your background and reference checks come through, so it can often take a week+. Not a bad idea to follow up with HR.
