Nurses General Nursing

Published

Interesting video account below of what was said backstage. I really believe this exemplifies why Stetha-Gate hit so many so viscerally. It's fear. Fear that what we suspect regarding public perception of nurses is true. Yes, we know the pubic perceives nurses with adjectives such as "caring," and "selfless," and "trustworthy," but does the public perceive us as intelligent, highly skilled, and educated?

We've learned to deal with this fear and insecurity in the workplace as something that simmers just below the surface: a vague, nagging sense we are easily replaced and expendable automatons. (In one way I suppose we are. There are a lot of us, after all.)

My take on the massive outrage over a couple of ignorant comments on an insignificant, silly TV show is that since we have normalized it in the workplace as "what it is," it didn't feel so nice to hear it aired out loud on national TV.

I just want to add that I do not know if this woman's account is accurate. Perhaps she's flat out fabricating. Who knows? Still, it's interesting to think about it terms of why there was so much outrage.
