I have a question on my take home exam to "Write a slogan for a National Nurses' Week Campaign that would counteract the public "angel of Mercy" stereotype of Nursing.
I would appreciate any help.
Sorry, this isn't going to help you with your take home, but part of the problem is that we even have a "Nurses' Week."
We don't have physicians' week, engineers' week, or whatever. If you'll notice, the "weeks" are dedicated to predominantly female career areas. I suspect part of the rationale behind nurses' week is that we are perceived as a group of caring angels who would not soil our hands with, say, insisting on professional treatment and a collegial place at the health-care table.
Nonsense such as hospitals and other employers providing coffee mugs for their nursing staff employees in May only serves to perpetuate the stereotypes, and makes it harder for those -- like myself -- who don't particularly dig being part of the downtrodden masses.
