Hi all. I have been working in Medsurg for over a year and feel really grounded (I was an LPN for 6 years in LTC before getting my RN)

I would like to specialize and right now there are openings in the CVU.

What are your feelings on specializing? Just trying to list pros and cons for now.

Thanks for your input.

Do you ENJOY Med-Surg? Because it IS a specialty in my eyes. You have to be so many things! Well organized, intelligent, quick on your feet, and you deal with so many different organ systems. You know ALOT. Now, if you are bored or burned out or needing a change then go for it. Don't just leave because you think a specialty will be a "better" thing for you to have. A good med-surg nurse can be oriented to ANY specialty easily because of the vast experience and knowledge of all the essentials.

Good luck!

Excellent response, Sharann-- Couldn't have said it better myself!

That being said, would you be able to "shadow" a nurse in your CVU for a shift to get a feel for the unit? Or does anyone on your med-surg unit know a nurse who currently works CVU who might let you talk to them and ask questions?
