15 yo female complaining of lower abdominal pain arrives in er with her mother. during initial nursing h&p and assessment mom gets a call on her cell and steps out the the room to take it. the second the door closes behind mom young girl asks large, male, bearded, 40yo old er rn "if i give a boy a bj am i still a virgin"?

of course the first thing i did was intensly wish she hadn't asked me that. second i duck the question and run to find alice. alice is a sweet lady in her 60's who has been an er nurse since chritst was a coporal. she has litterly seen and heard everything. alice is working a chest pain case. i explain the nature of the question and alice and i agree to trade patients. i have no idea what alice told the young lady but i do know she had quite a long talk with her with the door closed.

Are you asking us if the pt is still a virgin? It all depends, as virginity is a social concept, not a medical one. Some people consider lady partsl intercourse to be the one true 'virginity' taker, with any other sexual activity not counting (manual, oral, anal). Others consider any kind of sexual activity to be a 'no-no'.

All forms of sexual activity can be risky in terms of STIs, and lady partsl and anal are risky for pregnancy. Pt education re: that would have been key, and the pt should make her own decision about whether or not her virginity is in tact.

You must have some great bedside manner, if a 15 yo girl came right out and asked you that though! At that age, I didn't want to see a male nurse or doctor for anything! :)

*** absolutly not! i was just sharing an interesting (to me) nursing experience.

*** you are right. one thing i knew for sure was that it wasn't _my_ decision whether her virginity was intact. to be honest i had never given the matter a second's thought and had no idea what to tell her.

*** we had already developed a repore. however i know when to call in the big guns (access resourses) and for me, on that shift the big gun was alice who has vast experience dealing with young ladies and their sexual questions, not to mention she is the mother of 5 daughters and a grandmother to a number of grand daughters. i don't even know what they talked about, except that alice commented the issue was "taken care of".
