Recently I noticed that when feeling for peripheral pulses on my patients, I couldn't determine if I was feeling theirs, or mine in my fingertips -- nothing unusual about that, right?
The way I usually solve the problem is by feeling my own carotid pulse while palpating theirs so I could tell the difference. Lately, though, I've discovered that every time I do this, my pulse exactly matches my patient's!! I had two other nurses check this independently -- both with a doppler and by hand -- and it's true!! When I'm feeling pulses my heart rate will drop or raise to match! Weird, eh? How's that for biofeedback control? I just wish I was able to do it consciously.
Anyone else have this weird experience?
