duquesne university school of nursing is sponsoring a bioterrorismpreparedness symposium on saturday, february 23, 2002, 8am-4pm. it will be held in the fisher convention center on campus.

this symposium is being organized to educate health care providers and those interested in this topic in biological and chemical warfare and weapons of mass destruction disaster preparedness. a focus will be placed on three specific areas of interest, administration, education, and primary care.

the overall objective:

to provide health care providers with strategies and guidelines that will enable them to react and respond appropriately in the event of a national or local disaster involving biological and chemical warfare and other weapons of mass destruction

the morning will include presentations by key people in the field of bioterrorism preparedness. dr. bruce dixon, director of the allegheny county health department, will be one of the keynote presenters. he will give an overview and introduction to anticipated major agents [biological (anthrax, smallpox, plague, tularemia, ebola, etc.) and chemical] involved in bioterrorism. this will include descriptions, clinical findings and symptoms, treatment, and proposed responsibilities nationally, regionally, and locally. cdc guidelines will be addressed. dr. dixon will also facilitate the primary care provider's breakout session in the afternoon.

the second keynote speaker will be captain veronica stephens, rn, msn, anp, senior program management officer/consultant, office of emergency preparedness, department of health and human services. captain stevens will discuss bioterrorism preparedness from a nursing perspective. how nursing should respond and prepare their employees, students, and clients will be the focus. captain stevens will present at the breakout

session for educators including curriculum development and guidelines for capstone courses as well as integrating the concepts throughout the curriculum.

three (3) interactive breakout sessions led by our panel of experts in the field of disaster preparedness will be conducted in the afternoon. presenters from the morning will each facilitate these sessions. an additional facilitator for the breakout sessions will be frederick peterson from hospital council of western pa. each session will be geared toward one of three interest areas. mr. peterson will facilitate for the administrators, captain stephens, the educators, and dr. dixon the primary care providers. discussion of issues of particular importance to and of interest to these groups will be the focus.

the day will conclude with a brief presentation by each of our

presenters on where do we go from here. questions from the audience will be entertained.

target audience

the target audience will include nurses, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse midwives, physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, lawyers, social workers, and other health care providers and students.

on-line presentation

the symposium will be recorded on video for presentation online from march 23- june 23, 2002. during this time participants who register for the online session may gain access to the presentations and complete them at their convenience. in order to be awarded psna contact hours and receive a certificate of successful completion, the online participants must complete and submit a participant evaluation form.

continuing education

duquesne university school of nursing is approved as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the pennsylvania state nursing association which is accredited as an approver of continuing education in nursing by the american nurses credentialing center's commission on accreditation. a total of 5.4 contact hours will be awarded to participants.
