Nursing School Questions/Concerns

Nurses General Nursing

Published

]Hello,

]I know many people have asked questions about the amount of blood seen in nursing professions; however I have not found a definite answer. I am truly interested in becoming a Nurse Esthetician and possibly even a FNP who works in a Med Spa, Plastic Surgeons office, or Laser Institute. I am a senior in high school looking to apply to Nursing Programs next fall but am nervous about the blood, cuts, and surgery I may have to witness in nursing school. The sight of an open wound does make me queasy. Do you get to choose your clinicals? For instance would I be forced to take part in a surgical or ER clinical?

]Thanks for all your help!

wanted to add a story about my ob clinicals. three of us were able to watch a c-section. i was there with the nurse assigned to the infant, the two other students were there with the mother's nurse. anyway, after the baby was out and dried one of the nurses brought the placenta over to show us "shiny shultz, dirty duncan, etc). then, she was like "who wants to hold it"? she started moving it around before finally putting it in the container. one of my friends who was not normally bugged by anything, hadn't eaten breakfast yet. she had become woozy, and had to leave teh room because she became hot. so, point being, even those that have iron stomaches have days like that as well. you'll be ok!

Hey,

I am my third and final semester of a LPN class. We have 14 students in class. The concern is that only 2 students have passed the tests and quizzes. They barely passed with an 80 which is what is needed to pass the class. If the other 12 students do not come out with an 80 we will all have to wait another year, that is if our GPA don't take us out first. The questions on the tests and quizzes have two possible answers, and it seems as though the answer is what the teacher says it the right answer. Even if the question is found in the book with another answer the teacher will not choose give credit. Half the class is comtemplating withdrawing and just giving up. The teacher start off with 40 students and only 5 or 6 graduate each year. The students that withdraw all blame the teacher. Should the entire class withdraw or try to pull threw and risk our GPA's?

Does this mean that we should not be nurses because we cannot pass the teachers tests and quizzes. Any help would be nice before we all pull out our hair.

Thanks for all the answers. I am still nervous but hopefully I will get over it!

Yes they can perform Botox in certain states, do chemical peels, and laser work.

I remember in my first clinical i had to do a wound change for a stage VI pressure ulcer. It was horrible I thought I was going to pass out. The smell was something I can't even begin to explain. My instructor taught me a great tip, and that was to take an alcohol pad in your hand and place it up to your nose and that neutralizes the air so that you won't get sick or feel faint from any smells.

I have always had a queasy stomach -- I had a lot of the same worries you do. However...it's very different when you've got something to do, not just watching. You're concentrating more on how to help the patient vs. clinicals where you stand around watching something being done. We get a lot -- and I mean a LOT -- of GI bleeds on our floor, and the smell of a GI bleed will get in your hair and in your clothes. I get the Bath and Bodyworks hand cleaning jells and use them (in addition to the facilities' normal guidelines) to break the smell.

And don't be surprised if it's not as bad as you think. But keep in mind, everybody has their "thing" -- one person I work with can't take sputum -- she'll gag up her toenails if she has to do a sputum sample. Another can't take vomit, and will vomit right along with a patient. I puke if I have a burn patient. What we usually do is I'll take the GI bleed, and someone else will take the 3rd degree burn. You swap out in the real world, but you learn to take care of all of it.

If you feel sick during a certain clinical are you allowed to leave?

You might want to post your own thread so you can get the proper response. I don't think you'll get as many responses if you piggy back on someone elses thread.
