Add copy of CPR card and BLS certification. Also if you have any schalorship award letters, put that in there also.

When I first started looking for jobs, I carried around transcripts, reference letters, all kinds of stuff. All they really wanted was a copy of my license and my CPR card. Maybe there's just a bigger shortage here than in other parts of the country, but most of my interviews have kinda gone like this:

You have a license? When can you start?

This is for LPN positions, which is a tighter market than the RN market. I see so many posts on how bad the economy is and how hard it is for RN's to find work. But, right now there are 145 RN postings at Methodist Hospital here, 42 at St. Francis, and I'm not going to bother checking the 4 or 5 other hospitals here.

Hey there! I think you are missing the basics :-) Resume and reference list!

A former employer that I had an excellent record with cannot give a reference due to hospital policy. They can only say that they would or would not rehire that person, so I offer copies of performace evaluations from that job.

I am a new grad in CA and there are NO positions here. It really sucks. There are a couple hospitals that take 5-10 nurses out of the 1200 people that apply. I have to find a way to make myself stand out!

Sounds like you have your ducks in a row!!! I'm sure you will get your dream job before you know it. You have the hardest part behind you. This is a piece of cake compared to all that you have been through! Good luck on your interview!!! :yeah:

Hey just a little advice to you...long shot, but hey? I cannot get work as a new grad so I sent an email asking to volunteer or just learn to two different recruiters at my first choice hospital. They did not take any new grads. One told me no (they did not have that type of opportunity for an RN wanting to do patient care, etc.) Today I got called from the other recruiter saying that they can hire me as an RN, paid the new grad rate, prn, for a short term period doing flu shots! It's a foot in the door. If you can't get work, which I have not in addition to this, offer to volunteer. Show initiative. Even if you don't end up working there after, it's a resume booster for a little down the road when you filling out applications.

That is a good idea! I am doing the same thing. I have an orientation to volunteer, then an interview and if I pass that I can pay ($20-$150) to volunteer. Crazy, I never thought I would have to pay to volunteer!!! But, like you said, it is a foot in the door, so I will do what I have to!!!!!

Holy Moly! I have always told myself that I would pay for the additional training so that I am no longer seen as a new grad...but wow now that I actually hear about it, it sounds crazy! I would have to take out a personal loan! Good luck to you.

pay to volunteer? I don't think so. I found my position online on some volunteer website. I think they were so happy to get me. I volunteer 1 day/week so that I can still job search and volunteer elsewhere. On Friday, I "bumped" into a Nurse Manager on the elevator...I talk to everyone with an id on the elevator and in hallways when on my break/lunch...He said, I love the fact that you are volunteering and I want to reward that. I will call you as soon as I have an opening! FREE! plus lunch/parking included!

Lucky. No one in this town volunteers at major hospitals for free or without an interview. Too many people and too many weirdos I guess!!
