I am in a pre nursing class for LVN and we are required to take a math test and get 100% to pass the class. Is this typical for a LVN or LPN class. I understand that this is not required for the RN program. I have trouble when ever I am required to get 100%. The thought of it is enough to make me nervouse and mess up. I understand the importance of math skills and nursing. How much of it do you use on the job and are you able to double check with anyone? Thanks, Mel

Math is very important in nursing ,you should feel comfortable and not be scared .I will give you some help to understand the problem.

1.Many new students are used to calculators ,phones and computer math resolving problems at school but now they will face life threatening situations and quick math calcultions to save your patients lifes(pencil and paper ).Math is important but if you have trouble do not hesitate to look for help outside ,so you do not loose your career dream as a nurse. They have many tutors in universities like in the math and physics dept ,your elementary school or high School profesors,ask for help and tried to find the problem you have .I find out that a 5th grade school teacher will give you the tools to solve ratio and proportions as decimal divisions.Do not panic get your own help as needed on your free time and you will see excelent outcome in your future testing.No everybody is a good math taker but everybody should at least try with a good tutor to get better.

2.If your preceptor or teacher is good in math take your time with confidence and ask for help.

3.Teachers are there to teach and be sure your learning is completed before you are left on your own medical error is a big liability in your career.

I graduated from a BSN program and we had to pass math tests with a 90%. I calculate dosages frequently. I always do the calculation twice. If I am dealing with a peds med calculation, I always ask someone to check my math.

get a copy of calculate with confidence. Very user friendly for learning nursing math.

We had med math our 1st level of school and then pharmacology/pharm math the next 4 levels. All of our levels we has to pass with 78% to stay in school. If you failed then you had to repeat the level. We used Henke med math book, but the school later changed to a different book.

heya all! well this is my stressor for the week also! we have to pass a #20 question math test each semester. which is esp hard for me because i dont reallly know that stuff perfect and stress about it badly until i pass it. we havnt really dealt with it much on the floors, so its always a hard time of the semester. hopefully though this will be the last time i have to worry if i am going to pass or not though, cuz by 4th semester will know it, cuz now, i will be able to use it all the time. we get 2 chances at the "quiz", and then if we dont pass it the 2nd time we are kicked out of school, and banned from re-entering. is that how everyone else's schools work? that is just crazy to me i guess. i have also heard other ppl say that they have to pass 100%; and others say even they have like more than a few chances to pass, and just cant pass meds until they pass it, that is crazy! the last time i screwed up the test, it was because i got soo nervous, i messed up one dumb stupid stupid thing that should have been right, just an error cuz i was nervous! so i am going to work my butt off more and sacrifice a little bit in my other class to make sure i understand it inside and out. ah...the woes of math.....:)

there are only a few formulas to remember. You just have to know when to apply which one. Also, every hospital where I have been employed had a math/med test as part of the application process. You just gotta know it. The best thing to do is practice, practice, practice.

We have to take a math test every quarter with 100%. This is our first quarter and we don't take our test until next week so we can't pass meds during clinical this week. Even the students who are med aides can't pass meds until the test is passed.

I think it's a good policy because not only would you feel terrible if you made an error on a real patient, you could cause a person to die. It's nothing to take lightly.

It sounds like quite a few schools are going to the 100% med math test but our school is the first one in the area to require it.

You'll be fine on your test. Just study and practice, study and practice.

So nursing math and college algebra... tell me they are different!!! lol

i also had to take a 100% math test i stressed more than needed to wich caused me to have to repeat it so relax and take your time i had no problems the second time around
