New grads having trouble finding jobs

How many other new grads are having trouble finding jobs in their states that either they graduated from or want to live in??????

I am hearing this from many new grads. They go to the all the trouble to go to nursing school, are told their profession is essentially recession proof but cannot find jobs when they graduate. On the other hand there are MANY foreign nurses still here, are they here on limited visas???

The amount of charity care, medicaid, illegal immigrants that are constantly pouring through the doors is astounding, everyone's taxes are going up/up/up etc. to pay not only for medical care but education also for the children of illegal immigrants.

I agree that immigration is a crucial issue that we shouldn't keep ignoring for fear of being labelled racist or whatever. However, it's also not as simple as "if they weren't here, there wouldn't be a problem." US citizens regularly hire the illegal immigrants to save on costs - usually on a "don't ask, don't tell" basis - whether it's a large manufacturer passing the lower costs onto consumers with lower prices or a homeowner looking for the best deal to repair their roof. Illegal immigrants pay all sales taxes and if they have obtained a stolen social security number, they might be paying into SS as well. Illegal immigrants also support local businesses as consumers. I'm not saying that that means there are no problems related to illegal immigration. Just that I don't think it's constructive to frame the problems too simplistically.

Now back to the job market for new grads....

Just FYI - there was a similar difficulty for new grads in some areas in the mid-nineties. In my area, several facilities were downsizing and many lay-offs had occurred, meaning less positions available and more experienced nurses out in the hiring pool. New grads at that time had to be very persistant to get interviews and positions. After awhile it stabilized and new grads were once again being actively courted by some hospitals.

these things seem to go in cycles

right now with the economy in the ditch a lot of sahm are re-entering the work force, retired nurses are returning on at least a pt basis and these usually will be hired before a new grad

hang in there, take any thing offered for experience and to keep your skills/knowledge up to date

sun is going to shine again soon
