The med surg/stroke unit I just started on as a new grad is getting ready to move to another building in the hospital and change over to neuroscience nursing. Apparently we will be getting more new-onset seizures pts, spinal cord injuries, strokes, etc. Neuro is my weak point, so I was hoping to purchase a good neuro nursing book before the move to study up. Any suggestions? http://www.amazon.com/Neuroscience-Nursing-Spectrum-Care/dp/0323044018/ref=pd_bbs_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1208513280&sr=8-3 This one looks pretty decent, although expensive. :uhoh21:

Also, if anyone has any words of wisdom, tips and tricks, or any info about neuroscience or these types of pts, they are welcome too. (We are also supposed to get epilepsy monitors and I know nothing about these. I know we will be trained, but any info on those will be helpful too)

THANKS!

I liked the AANN Core Curriculum book. Unfortunately, it is just as expensive.

If you plan to certify in neuroscience nursing (as I am - CNRN), the AANN Core Curriculum is the bible. It's written in a lecture note format, which takes some getting used to.

I used to own an older edition of Joanne Hickey's textbook, it's probably the most popular. I've met Ellen Barker and I know she has a textbook published, but I've never looked at it.

I recommend you look at the AANN website (www.aann.org), there are some free downloads of guides to management of neuroscience patients (at least, I think they're free to non-members) You can also download articles from the JNN in the CE page.

Welcome to neuroscience nursing!
