Looking for a Job after 3 years gap

Hello everyone! This is my first post in allnurses. I recently got approved for my greencard and my next goal is to get a nursing job. I took and passed the NCLEX last year. I went back to school for a semester before applying for permanent residence. Now I'm beginning my job search and I'm honestly so nervous and feel so stupid. I'm definitely rusty. My skills are for sure crap now at this point. I'm trying to review a little bit but it feels so overwhelming and I can't even decide where to start. I'm trying to apply in hospice, rehab and other long term settings. I read that it could be my best option.

Has anyone here been in similar situation? Any advice? I appreciate any feedback.

Congratulations on your green card! What kind of job did you have before your three year gap? Or were you a new grad when you came to this country?

Thank you. I never had a job as a nurse. I first worked as an admin assistant before coming here. I came here on a student visa just last year.

Consider taking a refresher course that has both theory and a clinical placement. You can find a list of approved refresher programs on your BON website.

I'm actually considering this but as of now I can't afford it. If I can't find a a job as a nurse I may just take any job and apply for a refresher course when I'm able to

Any job that will help you survive and pay for a refresher course is a good job! In the meantime, you can refresh your nursing knowledge for free by doing the following;

Check your public library for nursing books such as Physical Examination and Health Assessment by Carolyn Jarvis

Search Allnurses for threads on health assessment resources using the search tool in the top right hand corner

Ask friends and family to role play patients, while you role play nurse and take their (imaginary) histories and practice doing physical examinations

Practice charting assessments using the interactive exercises on freenursetutor com

Watch youtube videos on nursing procedures

awww thank you so much! Such good advice! I didn't know about freenursetutor! Much appreciated
