Just a sad situation

Nurses General Nursing

I went to visit my mom after having surgery at Kaiser in Ca (bay area) and the nurse there told me that they are not hiring new grads anytime soon and they just cancelled there contract with traveling nurses. This is just sad and although I changed my major from nursing I still have friends currently in the nursing program or have applied this spring semester for fall 09. So I still have a vested interest in nursing. This is just terrible:crying2:. I am afraid when my two friends graduate in May they will not be able to get into new grad programs because they are freezing them:down:

If they are willing to travel, they will be able to find jobs in nursing. I suspect some of the nicer longer new grad training programs (which I fully support) may see cuts in the near future. But there are still plenty of nursing jobs for now.

I also suspect there will be a slight drop in empty positions as the vast wealth of nurses who currently choose to stay home need to work d/t tightening finances, but I do not predict that effect will be fully felt for another year or so.

Our unit just hired 14 new people who all started the internship classes a few weeks ago.

The bay area is a highly desirable area to live and work so it may be harder for a new grad to get a job there but I'm sure they won't have to travel out of California to find a job.

Also consider that, unless this nurse you spoke to is in some sort of leadership position you might not have gotten accurate information. I hear all sorts of stuff on the floors that is absolutely not true.

The hospital I currently work in is always hiring and has a program for new GN's and so is this other community hospital about 30min away. It's not a year long but it's certainly better than what I got 28 yrs ago. Mine is a community hospital not sure what will be happening at the larger ones. Good luck w/ school and keep your grades up- this will be important when looking for that first job. Try to work in your local hospital during ALL your breaks as a student or CNA. This will not only improve your skills and knowledge but also job prospects after graduation.

I dont know if she is or is not in a leadership position, I also heard the nurse who was making up the other bed in the room that she was a traveling nurse and that she had to find another job. So it may have some truth to it. Nightshift82 I am not a nursing student, I changed my major but as I said before I have friends that are currently in the nursing program as well as a couple of people I know that have not been able to find new grad positons as some programs have been suspended. And from reading other posts as Tiffany RN suggested I think this is a bay area problem maybe?

I still say unless this person is in the know she is not in the know. Travel nurses have to find new jobs every 13 - 26 weeks. Which is not to say that there is not a hiring freeze at this hospital but I prefer to get that kind of info has to come from the hoss's mouth. I have been hired during a freeze (non nursing but same basic principle). So even if there is an institution wide freeze that doesn't mean that individual departments might not have funding or authorization to hire during that period. It sounds like your friends are just starting nursing school, so this isn't something they need to worry about for now. No market stays the same and by the time they are ready to look for a job the market will be different.
