Jean Watson Caring Science

Nurses General Nursing

Our hospital is introducing the Jean Watson method of nursing to us. They say it is required that we attend this seminar. Some nurses are having issues with it because it is "new age" and almost cult-like in nature. Has anyone heard of this?? Are you being required to do it? I think it's strange. I am doing some research online about it and I don't care for it. Also, on her website she is at the Mary Baker Eddy library when she is speaking in one video. Mary Baker Eddy was the founder of the Christian Science religion, which to my knowledge, doesn't approve of medical care!

I am a Christian, and I feel it should be ok to refuse to get this training about Jean Watson's "theory" if I don't believe in it.

I understand your concerns I too felt the theory slide almost undetected mind you off of the well beaten path and into some less traveled areas. I feel very established in my Christianity and from my relationship with God I have already transcended beyond the theories Watson presents and found it quite ridiculous that she is so "highly renowned" for what seems to me a simple utilization of the Golden rule mixed in with common sense, human decency, and love. I feel as though you should attend and not buck it too much based on religious conflicts because in all honesty...Watson"s new age trans-personal inner powered sense of oneness whether of the Scientology Religion or not is as close to Biblical paralleled principals some of us will EVER know.

As a professional I would attend only because I am wholly covered with the blood of my Savior and firmly footed in Him. I most definitely agree that the more I know the better I can speak about a topic whether in it's advocacy or it's opposition. I would be much more convincing if I bothered to discover all the facets of the offensive theory rather than merely avoiding it altogether. Open minded people are better respected by their peers and attending this would merely give me the appearance of being so. I would attend if required for my job wearing the full armor of God and in doing so I would be using the word of God by taking action "fully aware and wholly warned". I am safe in Him and I am protected by his Grace. He that is within me is Greater than he that is in this world....even when he is in sheep's clothing.

32 years I've been a nurse. I've worked at hospitals, LTC, staff relief in LTC and hospitals, and home care. I never heard of this Watson person untill I read the thread previously mentioned, long ago. Who cares what somebody makes up to make more income. My patients have never said I wasn't kind and compassionate. All these so called "new theories" are what is done by nurses all the time. Sounds like a waste of money to me, better spent on higher staffing levels and raises. Academia at it's worst.
