I'm meeting the unit manager (as an extern)

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I start a nurse extern job soon, and am going in to meet the nurse unit manager this week. I just had a couple nervous questions to ask please. Should I dress in business causal? (it's not the interview- I already had that. This is to meet the manager and the nurse I'll be working with)

Also can anyone give advice...if there is anything I'm supposed to ask or say when we meet? I just kind of planned to say how I look forward to working there, etc...not sure if there was something I should ask. I will have orientation to the unit at another date. Thank you.

Business casual would be appropriate, IMO.

I would go with business casual. You want to look professional whenever possible. You could potentially ask the nurse you will be working with some questions, in addition to thanking her and saying how you look forward to working with her.

Business casual for sure. I just got done with interviews and might have some insight to offer. You already have the position, now is the time to build your rapport with the staff. They are going to be your team and mentors for the foreseeable future. Ask the nurses and PCTs you might cross paths with about themselves and their own experiences in the profession as well as the hospital. If that kinda time isn't available, give a warm hello. People remember genuine. Inquire about the details of the externship, as they may vary from place to place, and how they go about advancing externs (some have a timeline, some may base it on the individual's competency, etc.) Staffing ratios is a common question. One question they really seemed to like was what they have noticed about new grads in the past cohorts and what we can generally improve on/keep in mind before officially beginning practice, regardless of whether I was chosen for the job. This may not apply to you because already have the position, but seeking and respecting anyone's wisdom is often welcomed.

Oh, gosh, I thought this was a little more recent and didn't look at the date. I hope it went well, and congratulations!
