I need some advice, new to the medical field.

Nurses General Nursing

I'm new to this site...well not really I've been a creeper for some time now lol, but I had to sign up today because I need some advice and this seems to be the only place I can get some.

So here's my deal. I'm not a nurse but one day I may want to be, still deciding. Anyway I went to school for Sterile processing because I have had an interest in surgical technology for a whole so I thought that would be a good stepping stone, get to learn about the instruments etc. So I finished school but had a hard time finding a job. I ended up emailing a hospital about positions I was told that they hired someone already, who worked in the hospital but the HR manager said he would hold onto my resume and if they hire externals he would call me right away. So flash forward two months later and I get a call from him not for Sterile processing, but for patient transport. I said yes to the job because I need a job and getting my foot in the door would be perfect. So I got the job, I was also interviewed for a second hospital job in their company which I was also offered but I stuck with the first choice.

So here's the dilemma, I'm two and a half weeks in and I am miserable. It's not even dealing with patients or coworker issues it's the darn hospital. As a transporter you have to know that hospital like the back of your hand and I have figured out the majority of everything I need to know to get around, I know the floors and locations but my manager wants to me to know which elevators go to which and it's all confusing and ridiculous when it doesn't have to be. I feel like when she explains how to get around its more complicated than what it really is and it just confuses me even more. I know learning takes time but to be honest when I was being interviewed I didn't like the sound of the job and was kind of hoping I wouldn't get a call back for it but I need the money. My question is, is it too early to start applying for other jobs?, there are a few positions open for sterile processing but is it too early to apply for the job I want that happens to be in the same hospital?. I know eventually I will apply to the other positions but is now to early?.

Specializes in Emergency & Trauma/Adult ICU.

Yes, it is probably too early. Most employers limit transfers unless you have been in your current position for at least six months, if not one year.

Specializes in Oncology.

Yep, what Altra said. The transport job will get better when you become more familiar with the hospital.

Give it a little longer. Soon you will know the hospital inside and out, but until then it's normal to feel stressed out and unhappy when you're brand new at something. I would let HR know that you're still interested in being a surg tech, though, in case a position pops up.

Why don't you take some time off the clock to orient yourself around the hospital? If you do it on your own time, you can relax and go at your own pace. It's easier to retain the layout that way I would think.
