I need help!

Nurses General Nursing

Hi everyone,

This is my situation. I'm a graduate registered nurse who finishes her graduate program in 2 weeks. I did a medical, surgical and emergency rotation. I need some career advice. I cannot stand nursing.

i continue to beat myself up over this. I spent 3 years at uni and have a hecs debt close to $20,000. I loved studying nursing I was a high distinction student, Dux of my graduating class.

basically, when I'm at work I feel like scum. I feel no appreciation from anyone. Patients yell at you, patients family yell at you, your management yell at you and rarely have I heard a thanks. I feel no job satisfaction because we are always too busy to provide appropriate care to our patients. I couldn't even feed my palliative patient her whole meal as I kept getting pulled away by other allied health professionals. Everyone has an opinion of how we provide our care as nurses, yet no one cares for our opinion.

in addition, I know it's what I've signed up for but I cannot stand shift work. I have no control over my life, I have to fight for my annual leave. My sister got married last year it took me 3 mangers and 6 months before it was approved.

ive never been a short tempered angry and tired person like I am now. I am always run down. I see lots of divorsed overweight 40 year old nurses. I'm scared to become one of those!!

I think in kill give one other hospital a go but if it's all the same I don't think I'll last!

The only advice I can give you is that the hospital isn't the only place to work. I was divorced, overweight, but not 40 before I started nursing. Now I'm in a relationship, not overweight and still not 40. Don't let this one place ruin your thoughts on the field as a whole. You are so far into it, why not give it a try and then go from there?
