I feel guilty!

Nurses General Nursing

Today, I was schedule to go into work. I am a Nurse Intern II (tech) and I am PRN. Well, this morning, I get up to get ready for work and my furnace wasnt working. I sleep with a little electric heater in my room with the door closed, so I had no idea the furnace had went out until I got up to get ready for work. So, I had to call in. I know they really need me and I was looking forward to going in.

The furnace man comes out and fixes my furnace and my heat is working again. My question is, should I just go in anyway? I feel guilty just sitting around at home, knowing they need me.

I would DEFINITELY go in. They will understand you having to do what you need to do. Besides, if it is fixed and you aren't working, what besides being on Allnurses is there to do? LOL Have a great day whatever you decide to do.

If you don't have anything else pressing to do today, you are certainly free to call and say that your repair was completed quickly and you are now available to come in if they haven't otherwise covered your shift.

However ... no need to feel guilty when unexpected emergencies arise. This will not be the last time -- stuff happens.

You are a human being with a life outside of work -- don't get sucked into the guilt trip that you "belong" to your job before anything else. This is a quick path to burnout.

Have a good day, whatever you decide to do. :)

Have you ever heard of Pascal's wager?

Think of it this way.. if you stay home you can sit and eat bonbons and watch TV.

If you go in, you can sit and eat bonbons and watch TV.. and get paid to do it.

Pascal, he was a pretty wise guy. :lol2:

Which tech gets to go to work and sit and eat bonbons while watching TV?

I think you should do exactly what you want to do. You've already called out and they have made whatever arrangements that they needed to so if you need the chill time...enjoy it.

If you want to work, call them and tell them, I'll bet they'll say come on in.

It's all up to you and what "you" want. Don't feel guilty for making either decision.
