So for the past few months I have been experiencing frequent and unreliable nausea, substernal pain blah blah blah.

Ok so my GI doc did an ultrasound and of course...I have a gallstone. 1.4mm.

"Well find a surgeon and have a chole, oh and see me in three months for a rerun on that lipase level"

Wait...what? ERCP? Lithotripsy? Voodoo gallbladder cleanses? Psychic readings? Something?!?!!?

Yeah, so here is the deal. I have a minor stone, with no inflammation, but I want to have a baby and there is a pretty high risk I might get in even more trouble once my hormones start to change.

But man, I just can't get MRSA, bile leaks, hemmorhage, sepsis, morphine PACU overdoses and a myriad of other things out of my head.

And I really don't like Ativan.

*sigh*

Sometimes knowing healthcare from the inside makes me REALLY never want to be in the hospital.

Bah. Tait

Specializes in critical care, telemetry, ER.

OH, man, I hear you. I am the worst patient ever. I spend my work life in the hospital, I don't want to be there during my time off too. I'm friendly and my nurses have no idea that I'm a bad patient. Just the thoughts in my head make me a bad patient. Like a constant "When do I get to go home????" haha

As someone who had gallbladder problems early in pregnancy I wouldn't want to go through that and be scared for my baby like that again. Once you're pregnant you're stuck unless you want surgery during your 2nd trimester. Thank God after my 3rd case of being in the ER with pain so bad my prescriptions wouldn't touch it I haven't had any problems since and hopefully won't the rest of the pregnancy!!

After I plan to talk to a surgeon about getting it out to avoid any problems with future pregnancies. Good luck!

Specializes in psych. rehab nursing, float pool.

Tait, I am glad you are home and well. I rank having my gallbladder out as the third best thing that ever happened in my life. #1 the birth of my daughter #@ total hysterectomy ## chole.....lol

Specializes in ICU.

Now see? That wasn't so bad was it?

Specializes in PACU, ED.

Being a nurse can be a double edged sword. As you mentioned, we can see all the terrible complications that sometimes occur. However, we also know who are the best surgeons/anesthesiologists.

Specializes in Management, Emergency, Psych, Med Surg.

This is a very easy surgery. And it is better to get this fixed now before you develop more problems. Make sure you have a good surgeon. If you have concerns about medications, talk to your anesthesia doc pre op. Let him/her know of your concerns (post op nausea, being overmedicated, etc) and they can usually take care of your questions or concerns. Use Hibiclens to scrub the operative area twice a day for at least 3 days before your surgery. This will decrease your chance of infection.

PS. I had a lap assisted total vag hyst with a appy and I was in the hospital one day and back to work a week later. Easy.
