A PT of mine recently came in contact with my family member who stated to them you may know my DIL and gave my name as weeks progressed the PT came in contact with her multiple times telling her their ailments and when they were in hospital. My mother in law told me about this PT and asked if I knew him. I stated to her the only way I would know PT or he would know me was if I admitted him. Nothing else was said. It turns out I did admitted this PT. After giving her lots of information Infront of other people this PT is trying to get me for a violation of hippa is that possible I didn't give any information or confirm any. Everything my mother in law knows came from PT.

Turn it around and file a complaint against the PT. Put the blame where it belongs. You are talking about a physical therapist, aren't you?

No I am not referring to a physical therapist.

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

PT = physical therapist

pt. = Patient.

discuss with your facility HIPAA compliance officer as this will be a he said she said situation.

PT generally refers to a physical therapist. pt generally refers to a patient.

They can file whatever complaint they want against you, I doubt much will happen, but as always...if you have legal questions seek legal counsel.

At all of the facilities I have worked at it was standard practice and policy to immediate report not only breeches in privacy but concerns or possible complaints of them. Small fires are the easiest fires to resolve.

Specializes in Peds, Med-Surg, Disaster Nsg, Parish Nsg.
