Help!!! How has Nursing evolved over the past 10yrs??

Nurses General Nursing

Published

i really need some input on the highlighted portion of this admissions essay question.

i don't really know much on how nursing has evolved in the past ten yrs, so any comment is greatly appreciated. also any suggestions on how to answer all of this in one page???

personal statement (one page in length)

students should highlight unique characteristics and abilities of self, their personal interest

and involvement in healthcare, and any personal life events that have prompted their interest

in a nursing career. students should also identify their knowledge of the evolution of the

nursing health care system over the past ten years in the united states.

MBARN08,

are you saying nurses are not professionals??

there is a lack of respect for everyone on the above list including finance that is non-managerial. plus hours for those working in the acute care setting are as bad as those of nurses if not worse (for example, social workers work more then 40 hours a week and are paid in peanuts per salary... no ot for them). also, working conditions are bad for everyone you mentioned if they have contact with humans on a daily basis. in fact, the lack of respect in health care is a huge reason why i will never encourage my kids to go into health care unless it is to be a professional such as a lawyer, a physician, or a pharmacist. i love nursing but i cannot stand the disrespect.

are nurses not professionals?? are lawyers, physicians, and pharmacists the only ones considered professionals??

i agree with this post. if i knew what i was getting myself into, i would never choose healthcare profession, except maybe being a pharmacist. nurses are so disrespected in general, sometimes i would rather work as a babysitter ( i used to do it and it was much more fun and less stress). nurses strive to be viewed as professionals, but the public doesn't view them that way. i never heard or seen that any rich family would encourage their kids to go into nursing, nursing is a blue collar job.

A lot of facilities are using more UAPs and similar assistants...nursing assistants, techs, paramedics, sitters, "comfort aides", etc...but a lot have eliminated them completely, so...

There are more safety features in place...needles with sheaths, needles that retract, hands free defibrillation, needleless IV systems...

AEDs...

Telecommunication...our hospital can turn on a camera and a computer and stream what is going on with a trauma, code, or whatever to a hospital in Denver...

mbarn08,

no, i am not saying that nurses are not professionals. re-read my post. i mentioned specific professions i would have my kids go into if they choose health care. not the nursing profession or any other profession listed by the other poster.
