Bingo.

Nursing eats its elders, not its young.

This is a really profound statement. It goes back to Nursing Against the Odds, when managers who cared about nurses were forced out because they didn't bow down to the almighty dollar.

The experienced elder nurses get forced out because *surprise* they actually care about the patients and can't stand to give poor care, as in the working conditions of nursing today. When they speak out they are labeled "noncompliant" and get broken by administration. Maybe it's good to be noncompliant. Experienced nurses are so strong, with so much knowledge to share. I hate to see this happening to them.

Like the OP and the many with similar experiences - is that any way to treat a senior member of our profession? How dare they do that to anyone who can run up and down halls, train new nurses and save lives.

As a newer nurse who would never have made it without my experienced colleagues, it disgusts me. :angryfire

Ok...I was invoved in the orginal post...I'm the charge. The thing is with me is that I though I really did need to change my attitude in some degrees and towards some people and become more "fair" and "friendly." Now when I see the HR lady I break out in a cold sweat! I've tried to move on, but one of the main instigators in this now works on a close, but different unit and I can't stand her! I avoid her at all costs and hope karma will burn her in the future! It's devestating when this happens, but I'm still there. I'm just trying to move on with it, but will take advice when and if this happens again! Thanks!

I don't want to go into details right now, but I wanted to throw my two cents in. I went through something like this twice: once as described by most people here, and another time that was much worse and lasted for 5 months.

Anyway, that second incident is what prompted me to apply to law school. I contacted 3 lawyers about the second hospital, and they all told me the same thing. The law doesn't protect you from that kind of thing unless you're a member of a protected class, ie a minority, foreign-born, gay, etc. If you're a woman being treated this way by other women, assuming everyone's the same "color", it's NOT ILLEGAL!

Check out www.bullyinginstitute.org or the book called The Bully at Work. Believe it or not, nurses are infamous for treating each other this way.
