Change with scrub design...

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello everyone! I am currently an Industrial Design student at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. My senior project is dealing with nursing scrubs. I am in the research phase and any information would be greatly appreciated. I am looking into designing new scrubs for floor nurses. I chose floor nurses because I feel they are going from room to room with numerous untensils including pens, highlighters, scissors, tape phone/pager...etc. With all of this 'stuff' it is hard to stay organized.

Do you feel there is a better design for the current scrubs? What do you feel are issues I should take into consideration?

I feel I should look into affordability, comfort, and organization as my main focus? Does this sound right to you?

SO IF YOU COULD DESIGN YOUR OWN SCRUBS, WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE?

Thank you for any feedback! I look forward to hearing from you!

Fish, I was just about to remark on the personal stuff we carry around. Lipbalm, little hand lotion bottles, tissue during allergy season (hospital tissue is too thin and scratchy), calculators, mints/gum.

PLUs all the other stuff.

I've given up carrying most things and keep a bag under the nurse's station because there just isn't enough room. Most pockets are too small for trauma scissors, or the scissors pockets on some pants are too shallow and they fall out.

Besides the usual pen, highlighter, scissors, tape, phone/pager, and steth...is there anything else that you generally carry in either your

-scrub top pockets?

-pant pockets? or

-hands when going from room to room?

Thanks,

I always carry at least two red caps, in case I need to cap off an IV.

Alcohol/chlorohexidine swabs...

Mini flashlight (more like a pen light)...

My little cheat sheet of patient info....

Plus what everyone else mentioned already....

Thanks again for the input. I didnt even think about the other things you might carry like tissues, and lip balm.

I have something to say about small, short people.

I am 5'2", petiete all over. I have so much trouble finding scrubs to fit. I usually end up in an XS top, which is too big and makes me look FAT, and is very uncomfortable due to the feeling of fabric billowing around me. For pants I always have to get XS and cut 4-5 inches off so that they don't drag on the ground. The pants are usually to big in the waist too, unless I get low rise which fit better.

I know that there are plenty of people out there that are smaller (girl in Nursing School with me is probably 4'9", 80lbs or so) and I have no idea how they get scrubs to fit.

Another grip. I hate the scrunchy looking elastic waist bands. They're so uncomfortable and scratchy. I got some of the new Cherokees that have a "boxer-type" waist, which are awesome. Much better than a drawstring or the old style elastic.

Just my 2 cents

:yeahthat: And cargo pockets sound like a good idea, preferably ones that actually have the velcro flaps to close so things don't fall out. Look at EMT pants and see how those pockets are, for some ideas--they have the big cargo pockets and also skinny, open ones for trauma shears, penlight etc. Then of course something will have to be done with the waistband (perhaps drawstring along with elastic) so it can be made snug enough that the pants won't sag when one loads the pockets. Also, it would be nice to have specific women's styles that are a little more feminine and flattering but still practical (perhaps more fitted tops etc. but don't make the pants tight!). Someone's idea of making tops with collars might be a good one for making it look neater/more professional; however I'd have to see a picture since it could also come out just looking dorky. I agree with those who have said washability/durability/no ironing are important; also what about some sort of stain-repellent treatment?

Hi all!

here are my 2 cents.......but let me establish a few important notes;

1) i was born without breasts...

2) low riders....GAAAAA seriously save your stretched-out panoramic butt tattoo for your trucker boyfriend.

3)White pants - GAG you either see TOO much, or NOT ENOUGH underwear.

OK, How about designing decent scrubs for guys that are boot-cut, so they'll fit over my Shox, but don't look like flares with slits at the foot. Also, I'd like a trimfit scrub top that doesn't have boobspace built in, or room for the female "pear" hip shape. My scrubs are either too short,[i'm 6'] narrow in the legs, but about 48" in the hips [i wear 32"] or too baggy around the chest [again, I have no boobs] So my problem is mainly size and fit. Actual sleeves, rather than the scrubs made from a front/back piece of cloth, are great.

Think about designing scrubs for men. We will buy 'em, since no one has made a decent design yet!

Thanks for listening to my venting....

Right Steve. And pants with a FLY! (I know I mentioned that in a previous post, but it is a Pet Peeve of mine.) Is that so much to ask?
