Canadian Nurses_Boxing Day question...

Canadian Nurses (or anyone who knows) what is Boxing Day (December 26)? I have seen it on my calendar-is this considered a paid holiday in Canada?

According to Wikipedia it is a "Bank Holiday" in the UK, Canada etc. There is a long description there. I don't know about if it is a paid holiday as I am in SC and nowhere near Canada.

I live in Australia and it's currently Boxing Day here. I was just as confused, this is when Australians go shopping (think day after Thanksgiving in the states). NO ONE over here wants to work on Boxing Day. There's also a huge cricket match on today (snooze.)

Boxing Day isn't a statutory holiday in British Columbia, but it always seemed like one to me, since I've never had to work on that day.

ERik J: I had to look it up and you're right; although, you might want to be working Boxing day because we still are getting paid like a stat. It must be a union thing here in BC.

Big thing in the UK with lots of sports evernts, supposedly sales and people queue for hours to get to them Harrods in London has a big sale if I remember rightly

Traditionally it stems from the wealthy giving boxed left overs to their servants and other workers and just expanded from there

Canadian here!! Its the day after christmas where all the stores have HUGE sales to change inventory. Its almost like Black Friday for the US.

Great sales, but large crowds.

My birthday is today and I remember growing up and wondering if Boxing Day meant a boxing match(on my birthday) ---now I understand!
