? Men on Depo Provera ? Help ?

Nurses General Nursing

I work in a small town hospital ,my unit is the designated pediatric unit. and we all have our PALS and our clearances and etc.

Our unit also takes a variety of other patients. Last week I got a male medical pt. in his 30's with no significant medical history other than an undisclosed psych history.

He was on multiple psych meds but also Depo Provera.

Other than for cancer my co workers and I could not come up with any other reason for a man to be on this med with the exception to chemical sterilization.

Point is we had 6 pediatric patients on the unit all post-op T & A's 4 of them young girls so we asked if there was A history of the Depo pt. being a sexual predator and we were told that it was not our concern that alarms me greatly.

What are your thoughts?

Peace .......... Billy:confused:

I remember when my daughter was young and had surgery. So little, so sick, so helpless. I would have thanked God to have a nurse who was looking out for her the way you looked out for the little ones. It is bad enough that they are sick and helpless, but to have to worry that the hospital may have put a sexual predator on their pediatric floor is enough to give me nightmares.

You were absolutely right in demanding to know his psych hx or the reason for the depo. You were in charge of protecting your most helpless, fragile patients. His rights do not supercede those children's rights. You did your job well and if my child was under your care I would have felt that you were her protector. God bless.

In most hospitals patients are not allowed to go in one another's rooms. Can you put this guy by the desk to keep an eye on him and solve the whole problem? Is he well enough to even care about sex- if he is sick enough to be in the hospital he may not have the strength to get out of bed, let alone get by parents and nurses and silence a struggling child.
