I work in an Endoscopy unit where the prep of choice is between OsmoPrep and Fleets Phosphosoda. Well today we had a email from head honcho doc that the Fleets Phosphosoda was dangerous and it has been linked to atleast 2 pt. deaths from renal failure... so we are canning it.. we are to use Osmoprep, TriLytely or Moviprep from now on. Isn't Osmoprep just the same thing in capsule form?? and Moviprep leaves sooo much residue behind. Has anyone else's Unit banned Fleets Phosphosoda? :uhoh21:

Allison,

No, but I'll tell you one thing. Fleets phosphasoda sent me into cardiac irritability last time I had it for routine colonoscopy. I was in the hospital connected to a monitor for 2 days and continued to throw pvc"s for weeks. Wicked stuff!!!! I think it should be BANNED!!! :o

Our docs discontinued fleet phos. many months ago due to the renal failure thing. We now use 3 bisacodyl tablet with large h2o at 4pm then at 5 pm glycolax 255gm mixed into 64 oz gator ade or crystal light. Drink 8 8 oz glasses of gator ade

one glass every 20 minutes till gone. npo after mid night. colonoscopy in am. THis seems to work well. Also the morning before the procedure pt is on clear liquids all day. JoAnn

yes, we have not used it in several months for the same reasons. We typically use Golytely and are starting to use movi-prep some. we have seen where the movi-prep patients are not prepped well also.

I notice none of you mention Magnesium Citrate as a prep. There's less volume to drink over such a short period of time and the taste is no worse and possibly a bit better than the Lytely preps. Is there a reason for not utilizing the Mag Cit as a prep??

i believe Mag Citrate and Phosphosoda are in the same category when it comes to electrolyte distubances/renal failure. but that is a really good question since its cheaper and less to drink... i think i will ask tomorrow ;)

Well, it IS important that the patient drink plenty of fluids when utilizing Mag Cit but that gives them the option of drinking more tastey fluids than the sewer water tasting Lytely products. Patients are still told to drink the same volume of water or other clear liquids as they would ingest if using the Lytely products but they also have a longer period of time in which to down that much fluid making them more comfortable and w/less nausea.

Our facility has pretty much stopped using the fleet phosphosoda prep as well, gatorade/miralax, w/dulcolax, and now a new prep 15 senna x'2 two with 2 liters of any clear liquid. I hear they are having good results with this prep also. Also depends on the doc as to which prep he prefes, some prefer the golytely.

MY HUSBAND HAD TO USE THE FLEETS AS PART OF HIS PREP FOR COLONOSCOPY AND I THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO PASS OUT. THE NEXT DAY HIS BP WAS SO LOW THEY ALMOST DIDN'T DO THE PROCEDURE. NOW MY 22 YR OLD DTR IS IN THE AIR FORCE AND HAS TO HAVE A COLONOSCOPY. SHE TOLD ME THE PREP WAS FLEETS PHOSPHOSODA AND I AM REALLY CONCERNED BECAUSE SHE LIVES ALONE OFF BASE. THEY ARE CONCERNED BECAUSE SHE HAD NO BOWEL SOUNDS AT HER GI VISIT. SHE HAS HAD SEVERE ABD PAIN, BLOATING, LARGE HARD STOOL OR STRAIGHT RECTAL BLEEDING FOR A FEW YEARS NOW. I CAN'T BE WITH HER RIGHT NOW, SHE IS SEVERAL STATES AWAY.

Did they do an xray on your daughter to see if her colon is full of stool? Alot of people have done that prep without problems, but our facility has stopped it because of the issues previously noted here. Good luck to her.

She didn't say that they did. Does it make a difference in the prep? The doctor told her he could not hear any bowel sounds.

I don't think it would make a difference in the prep, but if shes full it may be harder to get cleaned out.
