UNF Accelerated BSN Summer 2013

U.S.A. Florida

The deadline to apply for UNF's Accelerated BSN program beginning Spring 2013 will be here before we know it (January 15, 2013), which is why I wanted to go ahead and start this topic now. Many of us are taking the TEAS V soon (if we have not already) and finishing up prerequisites (if needed), so I am sure we all have some questions or information to share with each other.

Mrsdatty, glad to hear you love the UNF program. I am currently trying to make a decision between JU and UNF. I have heard several complaints about the community service/homebase project that is required, mostly from people saying it's too much time doing work they're not interested in. I'd love to hear your opinion on it. (And anything else that makes UNF so wonderful....I am really confused on my decision!)

Sarabeeh, have you made a decision yet? I have decided to take my seat at UNF! Although I was extremely interested in JU, I could not justify the higher cost of the program. Let me know what you decide!! Is anyone needing to find roommates? I"ll start looking into living situations from here!

No, no decision made yet. Just when I think I have my mind made up, I get nervous and change it again. I attended UNF for my first degree, so I'm very comfortable with it and would love to go back, but I have heard many students dissatisfied with the community service/homebase project work that is required, saying it is a lot of work in areas of no interest. I understand JU's program has more of a critical care focus. Both such good programs, so I am very torn.

The requirements are all on the UNF SON website. I am pretty sure it is all located under the tab where it says how to apply :) Are you on the waitlist too??

Homebase..... The program is very stressful. You have tests, quizzes, required reading, and then you have to stop and work in your homebase for an afternoon. I can understand why some people find it frustrating, but I really enjoy every minute and consider it a break from school work. There are several different areas that students are assigned to. For example in my area one afternoon we helped to test some of Jacksonville's homeless for TB. We give flu shots to low income and homeless members of our community. We volunteer at health clinics and take vital signs and accu-checks (blood sugar levels). I find it completely rewarding. It's a small taste of nursing in our community of Jacksonville. The first semester is a little more, but in later semesters it may only be 16 hours that you have in homebase. This can easily be done in two afternoons and single Saturday. I don't find that too much at all! Hope this helps!

Mrsdatty - I appreciate your insights. Can you give the breakdown of hours required by semester? Also when you say 16 hours you are saying that those hours are spread out through an entire semester - correct?

Also, I have seen the word flexibility applied several times regarding the first semester. I am wondering about this because I have to make arrangements for child transportation. How flexible are they talking? Will I have problems with planning for my other responsibilities? In other words, do they give folks enough notice to plan for coverage in other areas?

Thanks for your comments. :)

So, have any of my fellow waitlisters tried to go ahead and start putting in their UNF/supplemental applications in for fall yet, just in case?

I submitted the UNF application for Fall last night, and when I went in this morning to look at something else, my Summer 2013 application status was listed as Cancel!

Commence heart attack...now.

I have NO idea what happened, since the letter I got in the mail specifically stated that "Application to the fall class will not remove your name from the summer waiting list." It almost looks like it might have been something the system did automatically when I submitted the fall app (the time that both applications were listed as having last had activity was exactly the same, and both from last night), but the status changes (from Waitlist to Cancel on Summer and from Submitted to Departmental Refer for Fall) were from today.

I fired off an e-mail but with it being Friday I don't expect to hear back until at least early next week. I'd imagine they're insanely busy over there right now.

EEEEEEEEEK!

I am SO excited!! After being very discouraged by finding out I was wait-listed, I received a phone call at 8am this morning offering me a seat in the regular program, with still a chance of being bumped to the accelerated! Yay!! So, I will be apartment/roommate hunting in Jacksonville starting now. I do have a large dog, so my apartment and roommate must be dog-friendly! :) I will add that he is an extremely well-behaved dog. Please respond if you are interested, and good luck to everyone!

HoneyBadger - I knew I had seen something like you were talking about before -

Mine only says home and application. I am so confused by having both the "departmental referral" and "cancelled" statuses. Does it say "denied" if you are denied?

So if I am not a student, but not admitted, denied or wait listed, what am I? Lol :-) Thanks for all the responses, this forum is so helpful!

So I emailed the nursing dept. and I was accepted into the summer RPL track. :-) There was a mistake when they tried to change me from the accelerated to the regular and it came up incorrectly that I was cancelled. Although I am thrilled, I had my heart set on the accelerated track. Can someone remind me how the wait list works? Do those accepted into the rpl track who applied to the accelerated track get bumped up first, then those on the wait list into the rpl track?

I'm sure she will email you back soon.

Congrats Gallop! Are you on the FB page yet?

I saw that too, Julie, but think it coincided too closely with putting my Fall application in (the two different entries are for Fall -and- Summer) :-/

Thank you, juliesnow! Yes, I am on the FB page.

Is anyone trying to decide between UNF and another school? Yesterday, I found out I was also accepted into USF's Accelerated Program. Both schools have such great programs and I have no idea which to go for!
