UNF Accelerated BSN Summer 2013

U.S.A. Florida

Published

The deadline to apply for UNF's Accelerated BSN program beginning Spring 2013 will be here before we know it (January 15, 2013), which is why I wanted to go ahead and start this topic now. Many of us are taking the TEAS V soon (if we have not already) and finishing up prerequisites (if needed), so I am sure we all have some questions or information to share with each other.

This blog is extremely helpful- thank you! So I am looking at the application status and it says- Admit and then under the Students tab- Academic Profile it says what program you got accepted to? Is this definitely right because I haven't received my letter in the mail yet but I live down in south florida area and am still in shock that I got accepted!

Aubrey - congrats! It is right  It is just a nice little shortcut that students from prior terms let us in on.

First time posting, thanks for the helpful info. I made it into Accelerated!

I applied to UCF as well but still have yet to hear from them. You have an interview with them this week?

This is a funny question but does anyone know the time of the orientation on May 2nd and 3rd?

Hi Sarabeeh. I don't think we can go wrong with either program! The coin toss is starting to sound like a good idea haha. Let me know what you decide!

Hi jm286683, this boggles my mind! I have no idea what I did in the interview that would rank me above those with high GPA's and TEAS scores. I was extremely nervous and didn't feel like I did better than anyone in my group. Best of luck with the waitlist. I have heard they pull many people from the waitlist!

I was always told that once you make it to the interviews, the GPAs and TEAS score didn't matter anymore. Those scores were just to select who would get an interview. The interview was to select who would get in out of the people who made the cutoff. They told us at our interview (back in the day) that we were all considered equal at that point, and that the interview would decide who got selected. Maybe things have changed.

Also, for those 4.0 students, try not to freak out when you don't earn all A's in nursing school.

A few things to know:

-You will not graduate with a 4.0 GPA. Everyone thinks they will, everyone tries, no one EVER does. Highest I've ever heard about was a 3.8ish (no job, no kids, lived at home with mom, studied nonstop).

-Nursing school classes are harder than classes you are probably used to. A lot harder. Like, make you sit on your couch and want to cry, harder.

- The tests are modelled after NCLEX-styled questions. For those of you that don't know what that means, just know that you will hate it.

- The class gpa averages at the end of the two year program are about a 3.3 - 3.4 .Some will get higher, some will get lower.

- You stand a 1 in 40ish chance of not graduating. Someone always fails out of the class.

More stuff:

- You will have to write AT LEAST one paper each semester while in nursing school. It had to be in APA format and it will be graded by people with PhD's. Sometimes you have to write up to 3 papers. Paper length seemed to average about 10 pages, with the longest being 20.

- You will have to present in front of the class AT LEAST once a semester. For those of you afraid of public speaking, you should probably go get some meds for that ahead of time. By the time you graduate, you will have easily presented in front of people at least 20+ times (in class, at clinicals, at homebase, etc).

- Group work. Most people don't have problems with this, but I figured I'd mention it. You will be assigned group work/activities all the time. Some of it will be little stuff, and some of it will be huge (like your senior projects, writing papers, and class presentations). Don't get lazy and put the work on your group members shoulders. Carry your load.

Anyway, that's it. Just wanted to share some stuff I wish people had told me back when I was in your shoes. The cold hard truth...non of that sugar coated "everything is going to be perfect and fun" balogne.

Interview is worth 50% of final score, TEAS = 35%, GPA = 14%, having an associates gets you the final 1%. [this adds up to 100]

For me the non interview portion shook out this way:

TEAS: 337 of 400 is 84.25%. 84.25% of the possible 35 points is
29.5
points

GPA: 4.0 of 4.0 is 100%.
14
of 14 points earned for GPA [pre-reqs]

Associates:
1
of 1 point earned

So far I have earned 44.49 points out of the 50 points set aside for those three items.

NEXT PORTION

Interview: Let's just assume that I scored the average of those who made it regular program last summer which is 393. [they don't tell you what your individual score was to my knowledge]

Interview: 393 of 400 is 98.25%. 98.25% of 50 points possible is
49.13

My Example Final Score:

TEAS: 29.50

GPA: 14.00

ASSOC: 1.00

INTERV:
49.13

TOTAL 93.62

Final Score with a lower Interview & higher TEAS Score: {prob a wait-listed example}

[TEAS: 375/400=93.75%X35= 32.81pts]

[iNTERV: 365/400=91.25%X50= 45.63]

TEAS: 32.81

GPA: 14.00

ASSOC: 1.00

INTERV:
45.63

TOTAL: 93.44

Clear as mud right

This is why someone can have really high GPA and/or TEAS and still not get in. The interview is meant to make or break you. They want to see that you are more than book-smart. With so many qualified applicants I know the scores were tight. Just because you didn't score well on the interview this time doesn't mean you won't do better the next time. I think Beth told me that [don't quote me] the average times to apply before getting admitted was 2.??.

Another thought, if you didn't practice for your interview consider practicing for next time. I had another nursing student friend of mine bring out the big guns for practice. I asked her to try to trip me up. She did... and that helped me think of things about myself that I had not considered. I will see if I can find the link for web site she found. It was specifically for nursing school interviews. I also understand that UNF offers practice interviews for their current students.

I really hope that those of you who are feeling discouraged right now will keep pushing forward. You did really great on your test and your GPA and now that you have an interview behind you, if you don't get bumped up from the wait list, you should consider reapplying by May 1 [deadline] to get into the Fall program. You will also have the advantage of not competing with all the folks who are solely interested in the accelerated program as they don't offer that in the Fall.

Good Luck all

Great resource, thanks!! That was more what I meant by what they were looking for/at during interviews. I'm familiar w the scoring for the rest of the process (maybe obsessive is a better word lol) but the interview is so much more subjective. I guess it's hard to know what qualities and personality styles they are looking for.

yw :smug: I am a bit obsessive over the numbers too, but I read some things that might confuse the issue so I wanted to clarify for those who check this blog out later on.
