Just wondering if anyone has tested and applied for the Galen LPN program starting in Feb 2010? I am starting in that program and am pretty excited. They are moving to a new campus which is awesome!

I currently attend the PNE program. My class is approaching the start of qtr 4. That is great that you decided on Galen! If you apply yourself, you will make it through! Do not let the instructors or the course material scare you, you can do it! The new campus is gorgeous and much much larger than the previous! Our new labs look like they will be great as well as the new simulation area that was not finished as of yet last week. I am glad they are taking a step forward to further help all of the students. I do hope; however, that they do not plan on increasing class size just becaus ethey have larger class rooms...we could fit 1 class in a room just fine at the previous site, now the rooms are doubled!

Thanks so much for the great info!! Funny you mentioned the course material/instructors.. I tell people and their reaction is... great, I heard it is a great program but really tough..I am not planning on going back to work until atleast the summer.. Where are you doing your clinicals? I'm sorry to bombard you.. but I am attempting to figure out the required books with not much luck.. guess I was hoping to get my books ahead of time. Also, I was told the class hours are 8-5 -- are you in class this amount of time? Do you have much homework?

I did not realize how much larger the new campus is.. I sure hope the class size is not increased.. Something else strange -- I used to work in that building and helped in it's construction..strange how things work out.. thank you so much for any info!! and congrats!! you are almost done!! :yeah:

I graduated from Galen LPN last August. Its a great school, you'll learn a lot. Just be prepared for lots of study time and tough exams. The first quarter is definitely a weed out quarter. We started out with a class of 50 and probably lost 20 people by the end of the first quarter.

Best bet...get that Saunders NCLEX book right away and start using it. Galen tests from day one are NCLEX style questions. Also, try not to miss any classes..the learning pace is fast so if you miss one class you may find yourself behind.

The hours for each quarter vary. Some days you're out by 330, others the class will run until 530. Some blocks you get a day off, some you don't.

thank you so much for the great information!! i feel like i am a little more aware of the expectations. i will go out and get that book you mentioned this week -- i need any help i can get with study materials. i'm also glad you mentioned the first quarter as a weed out quarter that makes sense..

i spoke to a previous student a few months ago she told me the same.. apparently by the 2 quarter they had lost 50% of the class. again, thank you for the info -- i really appreciate it.

oh' and congratulations on your lpn! :)

I have a quick question....was there an entrance, if so was it hard, what is the required score and what is consist of ???? Thanks in advance

The new Galen campus is amazing. And I'm not even a student (well, yet). The entrance exam is based from the book "Review Guide for the LPN/LVN Pre-Entrance Exam" from the National League of Nursing. You need a minimum score of 92, which is ROUGHLY 50%. GET THE STUDY BOOK. If you had good grades in high school, you'll do fine. But you can also submit SAT scores from the past 5 years and then you don't have to take the entrance exam.

Definitely go in and talk to the admissions counselors. They are extremely nice and helpful.

I'm taking their entrance exam in April for entrance into their August 2010 evening LPN program. I already have a degree (non-nursing) so I'm not worried about the entrance exam. I have a book list for the LPN program. The admissions counselor can give you a copy, as well.

yeah, there was an entrance exam - they call it the pax. the recomendation they give is to get the lpn/lvn study guide put out by the national league of nurses. i studied that book , took some online practice tests and did fine. i am 39 so have not been in school in a long time.. again if you have recent sat scores all the better (not the case for me -- obviously.. :)

the test was not difficult, but not easy. i lost track of my time during the math portion.. the science part was challenging if you have not studied. minimum score is 92.. the test is reading, spelling, math, science, reading comprehension. it is a timed test. doing well on your strong areas will help you in your weak areas. good luck to you!! and i would recommend going in and talking to one of the counselors they are very nice.

Even if you pass the test and get in be prepared to get your butt beat during the first quarter. The first quarter is when the weeding really takes place. We lost what seemed like half our class by the end of the first quarter.

Make sure you get that Saunder's NCLEX book right away to start studying from.

juli - you rock!! :clown:

i ordered that book as you suggested a couple weeks back.... i had a coupon from borders for 33% off -- so used it wisely!! i have also continued to review my lpn books... ever since you mentioned the weeding out -- i have kept that all in mind... although i have to say as the day gets closer i am getting so nervous and to be honest freaked out!! i am preparing personally now -- you know just house stuff.. kid stuff.. life stuff.. tax stuff... just everything i can in order... i am telling everyone make it now or 1 year...

when you say butt kicked... can you elaborate?

i do want to thank you tremendously for speaking up !!! i cannot wait for my book to get here..

Juli - I start Monday.. went to my orientation a couple weeks back... left scared!

Teacher walked in did not address the class and laid the assigment sheets for the first week on the desk to be handed out, we were told to be sure to read prior to starting class. So, I ordered my books that night, as that night we got the book list... and I have been reading. again, I am excited and petrified at the same time. There were allot of people in my orientation class - I would say about 45? I think I got all my ducks in a row and am ready... atleast I hope so!! :)
