Santa Fe College ASN Class of 2014!!

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hello to all my future classmates and a gigantic CONGRATS on getting accepted to one of the best nursing schools in Florida! I look forward to meeting all of you in the Fall. I wanted to start this thread to help us all get everything in order. There is so much that has to be done!

I saw they registered me for Nursing Process 1 on my eSantaFe. They haven't determined the cost yet, which is a bit scary. Has everyone scheduled their fingerprint appointment? The lady at the front desk said spots are going fast. Also when and where are you getting your cpr done? I know it has to be Red Cross certified, but does anyone know where you can get it done for less than Santa Fe's $55?

I enjoyed having this site to keep my mind off the "waiting for letter" process. I hope it will also prove useful in waiting for classes to start. I'm so excited, I'm anxious. Once again congrats and I look forward to meeting all of you!

Corrissa, that eases my nerves a little to know someone else is in the same boat as me :) thanks!! I'm going to get my scrubs soon too, where are you going?

Welcome to the club ladies and gentlemen! I, too, know no one else who is going to be in the nursing program. I don't even know anyone who applied. So, it will be a shot in the dark. However, I'm sure we will see people we do know that we didn't know who are also in the nursing program (wow that was worded funny). Also, now at least I know of you :) we are all in this together!Ok, so I was running some numbers on books and here is what I came up with:Santa Fe Bookstore (recommended and required MINUS Sim chart 2 yr electronic med chart acc):634.90 NEW476.25 USED**in my experience, buying used is a good idea. There is a problem though, some books will not have any used copies available any longer so it's like gambling to hope you can Find all your books used...Amazon (recommended and required minus SIM med chart):515.10 NEW???.?? USED**they offer many used books in varying levels of use and varying prices; the price could potentially be much lower. One down part of this is that when you buy used from amazon you must pay 3.99 shipping on every item because they come from different sellers (unless you have amazon prime which I'll get to in a second)If you buy new from amazon you can sign up for a free 6 month membership to amazon prime. Amazon prime is free 2 day shipping. So, not only will you get cheaper new books but you will also get them quickly! As I said this is from personal experience. No two experiences are alike ;) I bought all of my books (minus the recommended test prep book) for 485.67 (new). I ordered them Wednesday and all but one got here yesterday. The last one will arrive Monday.Oh and add whatever the book cost is to the flat rate of $264 for that 2 year med chart access from Elsevier. (I posted a link to it in a previous comment and think this is it. Anyone else have any ideas? Maybe we will get it more expensive through Santa Fe and that is why it is to available to buy? I don't know...speculating.)As for scrubs, I am going to buy my scrubs from scrubsandbeyond.com I found some on there that I like a lot. Also found a stethoscope there (littman classic se ii) and bandage scissors for pretty cheap.I bought shoes today. Picked out a pair of plain old white reeboks 8D. My grandma recommended them, hehe!Anyways, sorry for the ranting post. I'm kind of delirious and have been up since 530 this morn.Let me know if I said anything incorrect...Also, what kind of calculators do you all use/have? I've been using the same TI-89 titanium for the last 6 years! I am so sad I have to leave it home while going to nursing school. It's my baby!Oh and by the way, my name is Jaime. In case you haven't noticed I am really excited about starting nursing school. Should be a good time. :/ :)

Hi Jaime :) I haven't even looked at book pricing yet, I will be doing that this week for sure! Thank you so much for your insight on all of that! HUGE Help!! I'm going to look at shoes tomorrow (I'm at home visiting the parents and they are just as excited as I am to start nursing so they want to be apart of something! Lol) not sure where to really start looking, I'm just going to get a plain pair of running shoes or something. Does anyone know how much our patches are going to cost? How many pairs of scrubs are y'all getting? Thanks for easing my nerves everyone! I'm so anxious to get started :) and my name is Carlie, by the way :)

I apologize for the repost but the website will not allow me to edit the above post.

As for scrubs, I am going to buy my scrubs from scrubsandbeyond.com I found some on there that I like a lot. Also found a stethoscope there (littman classic se ii) and bandage scissors for pretty cheap. I bought shoes today (JCPenney). Picked out a pair of plain old white reeboks 8D. Does anyone know if we have to have shoes that are plain white or if they can have some color on them? I really want to get a pair of shoes that ill wear for more than just class and clinical.

I went to santa fe today and they said the shoes have to be closed toe and heel and predominantly white.

Hey y'all! I was looking for shoes and found several pairs of nikes that are mostly white with grey trim and a grey check! I would suggest lady footlocker (sorry guys, I didn't look at men's haha). I wanted to get athletic shoes so that I could wear them for more than just class :) hope that helps! Have any of you Purchased scrubs yet?

I did I went to Scrubs by Design they can be any kind of scrubs as long as they are Royal Blue.

Thanks! I went there but didn't find very many that fit me :(. I'm 5'1" and almost none of the pants were short enough. But they have a huge selection! So if anyone is looking for scrubs try there :) they have a petite section too! Unfortunately I still have to get my pants hemmed but I would suggest them! And you get 10% off as a student!

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to remind everyone that everything has to be turned in by tomorrow. Copy of CPR card, shot record and the physical form. I turned everything in today and also asked about the books. Even searching cheapest prices, they are going to be around $800! She said all of the books that the bookstore lists as required, we will need. The good news is, they are the only books (supposedly) we have to buy throughout the whole program. I'm getting really excited that school starts in just 5 weeks! Enjoy the rest of your summer, its the last break we will get in a long time!

Congratst to everyone!!!

I'll be starting NP4 in August.

The class ahead of me was not very forthcoming with info and I don't want you all to be treated the same. Our instructors told us that there were a lot of changes for your class but here are some things I remember:

~you will need sim chart for clinicals, ours started about 6 weeks after class started

~don't buy anything "recommended" until class starts to find out if you need it

~you will need an iclicker

~the litmann lightweight steth has been just fine for me, I've had no issues with "hearing" and it costs half of the classic steth

~its true, shoes only need to be mostly white

~a simple calculator is all they want you to have

~class for us was everyday for a few weeks and then it slowed down......a lot, I remember only having 10 days of class in November!

~NP2 will rock your world, learn as much as you can in NP1, you don't want to play catch up in NP2

That's all I can think of for now.

Goodluck!!!

@gatormommy thanks for the information! I was wondering what is the iclicker and what is it used for? Also, what is the sim chart?
