Recommendations for Melbourne/Daytona/New Smyrna area?

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hello to all,

I currently live in New England but the company my husband works for is in Chapter 11 and if we need to move, we figure we might as well move to someplace warmer. We're in our 40's, children grown, 2 spoiled rotten little dogs.

Did some research on a winter position - Oct to May - last year in Florida and was surprised at the differences in pay offered. I have 10 years of CCU experience, ANCC certification, etc. Hospitals on Florida's West Coast - Naples all the way up to Pensacola - offered me about $27 hr. with benefits, sometimes with free housing. Hospitals on the East side - Ft. Lauderdale to Melbourne - offered me almost $40 hr with benefits, usually no housing.

I'm now looking at Holmes Regional in Melbourne or Halifax Medical in Daytona. Anyone have any experience with these two facilities?

We'll be there from May 10-21 to check out both areas and look at homes. A pt. of mine recommended the Edgewater, New Smyrna Beach area as a casual, less crowded and more affordable. Anyone on the forum from that area?

I appreciate any info. My husband and I are Corvette fans - have a gorgeous red/black 2003 Z06 - our 3rd. We'd love to be able to have it out more than 5-6 months a year.

That is actually a good payrate for Florida, but you need to find out what it pays year round. Be aware you will be worked to the bone in the Winter and under utilized in the summer (low census) days.

Hey! I grew up in New Smyrna and work at Halifax....

I like Halifax, it has many areas to work in...their website is halifax.org...

New Smyrna is a VERY laid back town...but eventhough it is a small city, mostly anything you need is within a half hour drive....there is a Wal mart in town, many grocery stores, banks, etc...Daytona is only 25 mihutes away...

If you are into cars, there is a car meet on Canal Street in New Smyrna every friday night in the summer where people bring their anitque cars and hot rods to show off...

And don't forget the Turkey Rod Run evry November at Daytona Speedway!

Sahara,

Thanks for the info. "Laid back" is definitely our style and New Smyrna sounds like it might be just right for us. I checked out Halifax's site - it looks like they do open heart and I'd like to stay in this specialty so I'll have to contact them and see if I can get a tour and an interview while I'm down there.

Call Barbara Hinebaugh, she is head HR, or talk to Fayna the nurse recruiter... I have heard that we have an excellent cardiac program, I am in med-surg, but I have friends that work in CICU and open heart, and they love it.

And my boyfriend does Real Estate if you are looking to buy.
