NE1 have any info on broward community college nursing program?

U.S.A. Florida

I just recently learned that a friend and I have both been accepted to broward community college. I wont be attending because i'm already taking classes at Barry and have been accepted into their nursing program. but as for my friend she's torn between going to broward community college and keiser. the reason i ask about BCC is because i've heard terrible things about their program and this seems to be much more than just rumors.

I attended open sessions for other schools nursing programs such as keiser and city college and both programs brought up bcc's program and how they were under scrutiny because a large number of the students were either dropping out of the program or not passing the licensing test. when i asked an advisor about this he said they were changing the admission process because alot of students didnt deserve to be in the program. then during the summer i was taking a class with a rn who graduated from bcc and asked her what was going on with the school. she said the reason why bcc was changing up their admission process was b/c while she was there they were under federal investigation b/c someone who worked in the nursing department(receptionist) was selling papers to students. so far it seems all i'm hearing are negative things.in addition i've also heard they're understaffed, thus overcrowded classes.

Can anyone give any insight into this? my friend is contemplating bcc because it's public therefore alot cheaper while keiser is private.

IamPatty,

Did you pay a fee or penalty for returning the money and not fulfilling the contract?

My clinical rotations thus far are at North Broward and Imperial Pt. How do you suggest that I get out there and check out the hospitals to see if I want to work there?

Oh not at all. I got the check in the mail, then called the scholarship lady in north campus and told her that I did not want to sign the contract anymore, so she said to return the check in the mail. I returned it- and it goes thru financial aid so you will see it in your account online at BCC site. I kept calling her that I returned the check for 2 weeks because it showed that I owed BCC $$4k dollars!!

talk to the scholarship lady and ask her to see if you can schedule a visit with one of the hospitals that offer the scholarship, just to get a tour of the unit.

I went to kendall regional in miami, for an interview there, her office was in between patients rooms! so I got to walk thru the hall and peak in at patients, walked by the nurses station.... and it was definitely somewhere where I did not want to be.

For example, I did clinicals in joe dimagios, and I would definitely not want to work there! all that paper- I love my computer charting!

This is the latest from the BCC- broward community college website.

Don't believe the hype. This program sheet also states that you need a computer class, which is not accurate. The school plans to put an admission test in place. They've been discussing it for a while now. So, who knows when it will be implemented. It is difficult to get info about BCC's program. My advise to anyone interested is to attend an info session with the Assistant Dean of nursing on the campus they plan to attend. The website doesn't provide a lot of info and what's there may not be accurate. This is the same program sheet that I referred to before I applied. It wasn't correct then either.

This is a really scary post:uhoh3: !!!!!!!! I start BCCs ADN program in May 06. I ask anyone in the program about it and ofcourse they say it's tough. Some tell me you have no life but it's worth it in the end. I also had one guidance counselor tell me they purposely make Nursing Process I difficult to get rid of the weak. I consider myself strong but I must admit I'm really nervous:uhoh3: :uhoh21:

how are you doing? did you pass?? are you an RN already??

:nurse:

:nurse: uh hello quick question ..... for north campus where r clinicals ?

Clinicals for North campus are at hospitals in North Broward: University, Northwest, Imperial Point, North Broward, Coral Springs. Peds may be at Plantation as well. You don't really have a choice. You're assigned a hospital and time. If you have a conflict, you have to find someone to switch with you or withdraw.

Yes, that's the one. In process, the instructor asks if you have a preference for north east or north west. However, I think she's the only one who asks for preferences.

Hi everyone. I am an old fart with a journalism degree, graduated in 1984! Can you believe my transcripts were typed on a Selectric? Well, in the past month, we have lost half of our savings and have a son going off to college in 2012. Before I went to college, I considered nursing. I even did a high school practicum as a Red Cross Nurses Aide at the VA NHCU. I was an 'A' Science student. So now I am considering becoming an RN at the age of 50. This will mean having to go back and take some prereqs, then hoping they will accept an old fart into the BCC program.

I'm curious about the Health Core section of the prereqs. WHat should I expect there? Am I nuts for doing this? Also, if I do my prereqs and I don't get into the nursing program, will those prereqs get me into another Health Care program, like respiratory therapy or something like it? I need to start working before my son goes off to school. I'm watching his college fund evaporate.

Thanks!

Age is nothing but a number! I've seen all ages attending BCC (not the nursing program specifically). The core class (HCP0130) is about 6 hrs once a week for 8 weeks. Beyond that, I'm not sure as I haven't taken it yet myself. I think its basic fundamentals.

As far as using these pre-reqs to get into a different health care program, it really depends on that programs pre-reqs. If that program asks for something you took as a pre-req for nursing, then yes they will accept it. For instance, Respiratory Care pre-reqs are:

  • BSC1085 and BSC1085L (A&P1) and Lab
  • ENC1101 (English comp 1)
  • CHM1032 (chemistry for health sciences)
  • either MTB1310 or MAT1033 (applied math or intermediate algebra).

Nursing pre-reqs are:

  • ENC1101
  • BSC1085/Lab
  • BSC1086/Lab
  • CHM1032

So, your English, A&P1 and lab and Chemistry would count but you would need to take other pre-reqs in order to apply for the respiratory program.

Honestly, if you do well in your pre-reqs and end up with a high program GPA, you should be fine getting in, and you already have English complete, so thats good. Also, have you looked into other programs in the area? There are some accelerated BSN programs which are about as long as BCC's ADN program. They are for those who already hold a bachelor's degree and might be an option for you. Here's a link to FAU's accelerated BSN program:

http://nursing.fau.edu/index.php?main=2&nav=175

It seems, from what I read, aside from the semesters it takes to finish the pre-reqs, the actual accelerated BSN program there takes about 3 semesters.

The ABSN Programs are about 3 semesters. You take about 18 credits a semester. Those programs have additional pre-reqs: Nutrition, Algebra, Statistics, Microbiology, Intro to Sociology, and Developmental Psychology. So, unless you have all of these pre-reqs done as well, the ABSN route could actually take longer before you are working and making money.
