hey all -

want to get ahead of the jump and start amassing my textbooks now, can someone please let me know what the required texts are for the following classes? ::

a&p 1+2

microbiology

chem for health sciences

thanks!

Personally, I would wait till you begin each class to get the syllabus for the required books. The reason is that some teachers may require a newer edition, some don't mind an older edition (being significantly cheaper), some don't use books at all and instead may use power points. I would just hate to get the books and find out that you need a different one.

thanks, that is sound advice, but i'm looking to source used books, and that will take a while. not really into buying new books as in the past i've been burned with the "required" booklist for courses -- getting halfway into the course and realizing that i never even cracked the book once (best example being a medical dictionary we were required to buy for one course - google was so much better and lighter!). i have a couple editions of marieb already as well as netter for a&p so am most probably set for that, but would like some nice overall books for chem and micro....

Well in that case, the book I used for Micro (just took it over the spring semester) was "Microbiology An Introduction Tenth Edition" by Tortora - Funke- Case

ISBN-13: 978-0-321-58420-5

ISBN-10: 0-321-58420-1

However these numbers may not work cause I have the international version (significantly cheaper and practically the same material.......chapter order and cover page may be different though).

For chemistry, I took that a while ago and I'm not sure of the book anymore.

Good luck!

mjl88 thanks :)

i think different schools requiere different textbooks and editions. you might want to check with the professors first...

hiya, yeah i am asking about mdc - miami dade college....

Specializes in Public Health Nurse.

I wish I could help having just graduated from nursing at MDC but you seem to be sometime away from the program.

I do agree with you about not spending tons of money on new editions; especially if you have to buy them yourself with no aid like I had to. I used the last edition of the books we were required and trust me that the professors will be understanding of this since times economically are tough. I did manage however to buy the Pharmacology current edition but I even that I lucked out since I found on Ebay at a better price than the bookstore.

Chemistry is chemistry and is not going to change, just do not go beyond one edition old. Also on the lab classes, if the professor uses the book to do assignments you may have to buy those current as well.

Best thing is to wait and then once you know which class you are going to take, go to the college bookstore and see what you need then go to Amazon or Ebay.

Good luck with your classes, it is a tough program but so worth it. Ace those pre-requisite classes too. Focus on your goal.

Another bit of advise if you take a pre-requisite class for the AS with an awesome professor and he/she teaches a course you will need for the BSN and you plan to continue at MDC for that degree, take that class needed for the pre-requisite for the BSN. Good professors are worth retaking. I just suggested this to a co-worker who just took Human Growth & Development and Introduction to Psychology with the same professor, she cannot thank me enough (I took him too ;) )
