Info on Orlando area LPN programs

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi,

Im from California and looking to go out of state for a good LPN program. I am not interested in community colleges etc because of the wait lists and pre-reqs. Im a single mom and need to work soon. So Ideally a 12-16 month program full time is what I am looking for.

They have private colleges in California that are ridiculously expensive ($25k+). I heard that there is an Americare in Orlando?

Does anyone have info on them, is there a wait list? Tuition?

Are there any other reputable PRIVATE Orlando area LPN schools, where I can go full time?

THANKS!!!

Thanks Angelkisses and luv4nursing, Americare is sounding like the best option for me. I am out of the country right now on vacation for the summer, but I will try to call them and get an application packet. I am looking to move to Orlando around August.

I really appreciate all the info;-)

Hi,

I just got accepted to the august semester and I am SOOOOO nervous. I have heard so many horror stories but I have never heard a single thing (good or bad) about TECO and that scares me. I have no med. background and I am petrified that I will flunk out because of it. Is it really as hard as everyone says? How many people did your class start out with and how many are finishing with you. How are the teachers?

I really hope you reply

Thanks

TECO really does have an excellent program. No horror stories.

My class is TECO's 31st class, and graduates in 3 weeks. We began with 28 classmates, and are ending with 16. Not all failed out, some left for personal reasons. The program dragged on forever. However, now that we are at the end, its seems the past 11 months just flew by. I am going to miss going to class, believe it or not.

The first 3 months are hell. DO NOT fall behind. The homework you do tonight will be the lecture tomorrow, and the lecture yesterday will be the exam today. There is an exam nearly EVERY day the first few months. You cannot be absent for an exam, if you are, you get a ZERO for that exam. No makeup exams. If you are sick, go in and take the exam (always at 7:30am), then go home. However, then you miss your lecture notes for the exam the following day. 80% is the passing grade.

There were a few late nights that I questioned why I was putting myself through this. It is not easy. Truthfully, I even cried myself to sleep a few nights before exams. But I made it. So can you.

Make flashcards and pull them out whenever you have a few minutes, such as when waiting in line at the grocery store. I bought myself a digital recorder, and recorded my notes to listen to on the drive in every morning. You are not allowed to record lectures, however. The instructors will tell you everything you NEED TO KNOW. When you hear "You need to know.........." or " I want you to remember........." it WILL be on the exam. Take good notes, and study study study.

Just a few of my classmates had any prior healthcare experience before starting the program. You can do this.

Any other questions, just ask !

Thank you sooo much for the info and advice! I heard that if you get so much as a 79.9 on a QUIZ...you're dropped! Regardless of how well you have been doing! Is that true? Are the students catty? What are the teachers like? Are they the type to leave vital test info out of lectures and later on say it was your responsibility to read the textbook? What would you suggest I do in order to prepare for august? What is the #1 thing (if any) that you didnt like about TECO? Sorry to bombard you, it's just that you are the only person I have met that has been there!

Thanks again for replying! :saint:

80% is passing.

HOWEVER, say you are in Intro to Med Surg, and there are 8 exams in the course, you must pass 5 of the 8 exams with an 80% or better. AND your exam average must be 80%. You are not booted out for failing one exam. If your average is low, they will advise you......" You need to get a min of -- on the next exam to stay in the program".

I love our instructors. They do tell you everything you need to know. But the exams are NCLEX based. Most questions on the exams, all 4 answers may be correct, but which is the BEST answer.

Its still a very good idea to read the chapters. You will need the info sometime during your career. There is a power point handed out for every lecture. You will never have more than 2 classes at one time, and only 1 exam per day. They avoid giving exams in both classes on the same day. But it can still be overwhelming.

Your first day you will be given a syllabus for the first class - Core. It will list all the assignments, exam dates, and lectures. I sometimes did the following weeks homework over the weekend prior, so I could concentrate on studying for the daily exams.

The only thing I do not care for is that the program is on a high school campus. The school seems to forget we are adults. :angryfire We have to share the restroom with high schoolers (doing their hair, makeup, talking on the phone...) and if you eat lunch on campus, it is with the high school students. The soda and snack machines are locked until after 1pm.

To prepare for class in August.........take a vacation, watch some movies, read a few good books, and get some rest. Cause once you start the program, it will be awhile before you are able to do that again. Not trying to dishearten you, but the program is very difficult.

If you take good notes, study, show up to class everyday, AND REALLY WANT THIS, you will succeed. Just do not allow yourself to fall behind.

Almost forgot. All exams are at 730am. The door is closed and locked at that time. Come 5 minutes late, too bad. Big ZERO on that exam. And remember, you have to have a 80% exam average, with that zero in there, :banghead:.

I was so paranoid, I would show up at 630am !

Congrats on your upcoming graduation Chanzes MiMi !!

I couldn't have described it any better!! The program is really tough, but it really prepares yo for your NCLEX. I not only passed on my first try, but it only took me 35 minutes to take the test, lol! Also I'm doing a Transition program now and I was so preapred and seem to know a lot more than the students who went to other LPN schools!

Thanks Destiny, but this thread was started a year ago. I graduated with LPN31 at TECO last July, have been FT with PSA the last 6 months :)
