Entering MDC Accel Prog Fall 08

I JUST GOT ACCEPTED INTO ACCEL PROGRAM FALL 08!!!!!!!:yeah:

anyone been through this program/going through it that can give me helpful advice.....possible to work at all during the program? (i work at mercy hospital now as a CNA). how is the program? exhausting? exciting? horrifying?

is there anything i can do/study/memorize before i start???

i'm thrilled. this has been suuuuuuuch a long process for me, and i finally got my foot in the door :-) yay!

I did not go to that school, but I know one of my co-workers who used to be a nutritionist went thru the program.

She started in jan, finished in dec. took boards, passed and started working for utilization review.

She said the program was tough, because she had to still work as a nutritionist to pay for bills- but she made it.

why are you working as a CNA? don't you have a bachelor's degree already?- just wondering

Well, if my bachelor's degree was useful for anything, i wouldn't be going to nursing school, now would i? :chuckle

thanks for the info....wow, full time as a nutritionist??? i'm going to the orientation in a few weeks, but the general info is they advise you not to work at all....which is unrealistic for me, i think...

I know another person who had her bachelor's in psych and is working as a CNA-

a bachelor's from UM- but she is not very motivated to do anything else- and she is young! only 35 years old!

her parents bought her house- give her alowance money- so she says she works to 'get out of the house'

Alot of people want to go into nursing.

when I was taking pre-reqs at miami dade there was a person there who had a bachelor's in music and was starting the accelerated year program.

just curious- what do you have a bachelor's in?

I went thru MDC gerneric RN program. I definitly could have continued working thru the 1st semester. It wasnt that tough. 2nd semester was a lot more info and studying. By 4th semester I didnt even listen to the radio in my car, only tapes of lectures.

Congratulations, MagnesiuM! Did you apply for the generic as well, or just the accelerated? I ask because I applied for both, but I've decided to enroll in the generic.

At BCC you are not allowed to tape the class lectures.

You can't use calculators for math tests.

you can't choose your teacher- except you might have a choice between 2 during clinicals but you don't know that because it says TBA under instructor so you have to talk to other students in semesters ahead.

Well, yes, i didn't mean to imply that i "have" to go into nursing or that i have to be a CNA....i realize after re-reading my reply that that's how it sounded though. :o :uhoh21:

Anyway, I got my BA in environmental studies about ten years ago. After no success getting a job out of college, i became a CNA. It was a long, circuitous path before i decided to stop pretending that this was "something i'm doing until i figure out what i'm doing" and to admit that nursing was a calling...a vocation that brings out the best in me and that i love. :-)

So many people look down on being a CNA, even nurses who have worked as one themselves. It astonishes me, because after all i've done, grown to become, experienced by being a CNA, i just feel honored to be one sometimes (well, maybe not in hospitals, but in LTC residences and home care) I realize it's not at all glorious, and no, it's not rocket science, but....it does take someone of a certain character or caliber to do the job well, doesn't it? I've worked at LTC facilities where i believed CNAs had the better job (besides the measly paycheck): where the nurse was sprinting through passing pills to her 30 residents while i was holding the hand of one of my 8 residents and singing with her as she drifted off to sleep for the night.

Nevertheless, i'm excited to finally get into school and move on to something new. It will be hard being the rookie student nurse, because i've spent a long time becoming a great CNA/caregiver, but...i'm ready to eat some humble pie :-) hahahahahaha
