Anyone else "patiently" waiting the next few weeks to hear back about their application to the palm bay program? I had 35 points and I'm crossing my fingers that I got in and trying to not get too excited until letters go out. I'd love to hear from anyone else in the same boat

Thank you for the information! I have gotten most of my books already from amazon but when I came to the med surg package for $262 only from the bookstore I was hoping there was some way around this! They require the 9th edition but I did find someone with the 8th edition so I might consider doing that. The package also comes with an e - book but I guess we wouldn't really need that if we have the actual book right? Thanks again for the tips!

Specializes in Critical Care.

Although many have, personally, I wouldn't buy older editions. Here's why: nursing is an ever evolving field and new editions are updated to current industry standards and guidelines. Also, many older/used editions have the practice questions answered by the previous owner. These practice questions are a great barometer to measure your understanding of the material.

Practice questions become vital as the program advances. Furthermore, I once bought an older edition and personally found it a hassle and waste of time having to match up pages and chapters. Having the edition required provides a sense of security.

Thank you, I didn't think about it that way!

I just received my acceptance letter today. Im really excited. I found a lot of the books on amazon. Is it better to get the hardcover books or can we get away with ebooks? I have an iPad and a kindle account. Im just trying to figure out which would be the better option and what current students of the program would recommend. Thanks in advance for your help.

Just curious about the "nursing shoes".. do you have to purchase them at the uniform shop or any suggestions what brand and where to get them? Thanks!

ATI has a series of books that are helpful since we have ATI exams for Basic, Pharm, OB and Psych.

Also, Davis' Q&A Success Series is great, especially when you are supposed to bring NCLEX questions to either a study session or a clinical pre-conference. And finally, another favorite and helpful book in creating care plans is Nurses' Pocket Guide: Nursing Diagnosis Handbook from Davis'. As was stated above most of these books are on Amazon for an amazing deal, but you can also try Craig's List because the 2014 class just graduated and I'm sure some of them are still trying to sell books.

I used a kindle edition of the Fundamentals book. It was ok, but I haven't used an eBook since. Its not that I didn't like the eBook, but I found it much cheaper to find older editions of hard copies on Amazon and I got hand me downs from previous classes.

Can't wait to meet you and Smalltownhero- I had some questions on the list of books that they give us, which looks similar to previous years did they add more books once in the program? I find it odd that we don't have a required text for pharmacology? Also any suggestion on the ATI books? I was looking into purchasing the older edition of the med/surg book, have you heard of anyone using the study guide that can come with it as well? Sorry for the abundance of questions I just want to make sure I am getting material I will use and learn from instead of opting for the cheaper route and paying for it with my education!! Thank you in advance

Also anyone know what is inside the KIT and if we need to order any additional items from the website?

The "kit" lab bag has a bunch of goodies such as syringes, catheter kit, trachea care kit, saline bags, etc! This is for lab days and you shouldn't need to buy any extra supplies besides what comes in the lab bag.

To answer the question regarding Pharmacology books. This program uses ATI's "pharm made easy" an online curriculum. If you haven't already you'll be getting an email from the faculty so you can set up your account. All the resources are on ATI, but the ATI books I mentioned in a previous post are similar in structure as the modules on the website. I forget the cost of 'pharm made easy' but it is a requirement.

Hi does anyone have any suggestions on bags? I know I need to get a bag with wheels but should I have have another bag for just clinicals or just lab? Thanks!

you'll get a different opinion from everyone on this topic. Some people still faithfully use their rolly bag, some never got one, others like me never used it past the 1st week. My routine is that I look at the assigned reading and bring the book(s) on it to class and my lap top with a notebook and pen. Lab days I bring my lab bag, drug book, lab values book, and lap top. Both of those books are tiny so again, no big rolly bag necessary. Clinical days try to bring as LITTLE as possible because often your things are tucked into a break room corner taking up space so definitely no rolly bag. I loved my "nurse purse" that I got off of etsy bc it held all of my clinical supplies and I put my print outs inside.

It all depends on what kind of person you are, but I can say that I've never felt unprepared, personally. Hopefully this is helpful =)
