Broward College hopeful for May 2013 Nursing Program

I know there is a lot of confusion going around with the new requirements for the BC nursing program so I wanted to start a thread for those of us finishing prerequisites and applying in January. I'm in the Core class now, but other than that I'm finished with everything else and getting very excited to start next year!

Stacie, If all goes smoothly, I'll be going to North campus. I live way North near the PBC border. Even though it seems like its not all that far, it takes me a long time to get to Central. I have no idea how long it would take me to get to South. If I had to take a trek to school, I might have made the trip up to FAU for a shorter one-year program with a BSN at the end. Not to suggest that FAU is better. The word in the nursing community in South FL is that BC grads are prepared for the job when they graduate and are generally first choice among new grads. I just don't want to add the stress of commuting to the stress of school.

DrBeck, the posts on other threads here suggest that North is easier. There seems to be a sense that the professors want students to fail at other campuses. I don't know if that is true and it doesn't really make sense. How would students know that? They only go to one campus. I am only exposed to North campus and my sense is that its hard. There is a girl in my Micro class who loves to say that micro is a piece of cake compared to nursing school...every chance she gets. That micro class is hard and from the grades I have seen, people are not doing well. I just saw a nursing student dropping her classes the other day. After she left, there was certainly no sympathy from the staff. I could hear some of what they were saying and they did not want her moving forward in the program. BC lets students retake classes with the next cohort. I think they are most interested in making sure students know what you're doing and not in students' grades. A friend who graduated from BC said that they professors are mean. She was a top student in her class. I don't think the work is qualitatively different. Same books, same curriculum. Its just hard work at BC Central, Nova, FAU, anywhere. My understanding is that people aren't that nice after nursing school either, so you better have a thick skin. I'll probably cry, lol.

As for shoes, I have flat feet. I've been looking at the manufacturer's website and reviews to make sure the shoes fit my needs. I even went to get my feet measured. I agree that good support will be necessary in the nursing environment. I will check out that website for supplies. Thanks for the info. I think its probably OK to post the professor's website. I think they forum doesn't want students bad-mouthing professors publicly. That's a good policy that benefits the professors and, even more, the students who may not consider the consequences when they are posting.

AbyJr, I hear you on the commuting. I live closest

to south, like literally 2 minutes, and with the price of gas it'd be crazy to go so far especially since we will probably be going 4-5 days a week. I agree with everything you said in regards to BC students being best prepared. As a former teacher, I can tell you no professor wants you to fail, they just want to make sure you know what you need to know.

I haven't lived here in South Florida too long..I live on the corner of Flamingo Blvd/Sunrise Blvd. I'm sure I am closer to Central but am I really far from North or South either?

Honestly, you are directly in the middle of the two. Central definitively is your closest, north and south are approximately 30 minutes north or south of you.

Did anyone else get the Perry & Potter book early?v I saw it as a recommendation from other threads to get it early and start reading. What about fundamentals for success?

I also picked up a math for nurses book at B&N. I'm going to start reading now.

I might get the book early to stay ahead of the instructor, but I do best with the didactic part. Let me/us know how the early studying goes. Are you using the math book for the class?

Well I got my shoes- I went with the Doves and bought inserts for them. Not sure which Dansko's u bought, but those were heavy. Did not put on a pair where I was like Oooooh. So we shall see. These are light and like I said the inserts feel nice.

Went back and exchanged the Dansko's for the Doves! So much lighter!

Hmmmn...will I be fighting any traffic going to North? I wonder if that's a better option? Thoughts? Suggestions? Anyone...Bueller?

I am in plantation and still thinking of going to North because I heard people liked that one better. So if that's true the extra drive would be worth it.

Does anyone know the full name of the Potter's book we will need. and the book for math for medical students. thinking of ordering them on amazon to get a head start hopefully.

Btw, any of you thinking or wanting to go to North campus. PM me for link to FB group so we can discuss and plan meetups etc easier.
