Broward College hopeful for May 2013 Nursing Program

U.S.A. Florida

Published

I know there is a lot of confusion going around with the new requirements for the BC nursing program so I wanted to start a thread for those of us finishing prerequisites and applying in January. I'm in the Core class now, but other than that I'm finished with everything else and getting very excited to start next year!

I hear ya. lol

I don't really know that much about all of the other fields besides an RN, so what is the difference between RN and NP? More pay, prestige, schooling?

Nurse Practitioners are experienced Registered Nurses who have continued their education to at least the Masters level. They do indeed get paid more, but their responsibilites are much greater as they can practice medicine on their own, write prescriptions, and function much like a Physician (the level of autonomy depends on the laws of each State). In Florida you can practice medicine, but to write Rx you have to work with a Physician in a collaborative aggreement.

Depending on your specialty (i.e. Acute Care, Family Practice, Gerentology, Research, Municiple Healthsystem Management, etc) you can practice in hospitals, make rounds, have your own clinic, teach, conduct research etc. It is really exciting and an excellent way to further your career and help your patients.

The national nursing organizations have recommended that all NP's after the year 2015 achieve their PhD in Nursing or DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) before being allowed to be Nurse Practitioners, but that will be up to the individual States licensing boards and legislatures to approve.

I hope that little intro is of some help to you, and Lord knows I might have something incorrect so please look into it more before deciding on anything!

I'm a returning grad myself! 29 yrs young. Lol Christopher, I'm looking to knock out my masters ASAP as well. How long do they take and do they have online options?

I am not an expert by any means, so let me just provide you a link to FAU's page for their dual BSN/MSN. The time it takes is probably determined by how much undergrad work you have done already and if you are able to go full-time or have to work at a part-time pace.

There are online options for a lot of it I believe, but again, please don't take my word for it because I am in the same boat as ya'll are. :)

Great, thanks Christopher!!! You just made me 1000 !!!

My son just started his classes at BC. (No, I'm not gonna tell you how MUCH older I am).

Nah, anyone who holds their own with a 2 year old Pug must be young and resilient! Plus, our ages just give us seasoning and experience to handle the coming challenges should we get in... We got this!

All of the above :)

Another day gone, another day without knowing. When are they going to let us know?!?

Might not be till after the weekend at the earliest. I don't know about other campuses but I do believe HS on Central is closed Friday.

Hopefully we don't have to wait much longer. :]

Well the past years 2 notifications on Fridays

2 on Mondays and 1 on a Thurs, I believe

Well there goes my theory. Lol

Thanks for the info.

Good Morning All!!! I just wanted to throw this out there. As we get closer- I know how excited, yet nervous I get every time I

look at the application status. I know I have a good chance, but there is always someone better. I just want to say no matter what happens I have read that the people that get put on the wait and see list can get a change all the way into March. (in the past). So don't give up!!! Also, WHEN we get accepted, I look forward to meeting with you :) Have a blessed day :)!!!!!

Good to know I'm not the only one! Thanks for the words of encouragement and good luck to everyone!

Stacie29,

I have a five-year-old in the free VPK, which is only half a day and for children who turned 4 by September first of the year they can attend. I had to pay tuition for previous years. I looked at BC preschool. I was not happy. They do not let parents walk in to see what is going on. There are certain hours and you need to make arrangements. That is a bad sign. However, you can still put your name on the waiting list. Do it ASAP to get a chance for summer or fall. Then apply for financial aid. If you meet the qualifications, you will get a huge discount for tuition, otherwise it is just a preschool, like any other, where you pay tuition. You can also apply to family central for tuition assistance while in nursing school. It is also based on income, but you must be working or in school to qualify, and you must apply ASAP and it will probably take forever, but you can choose any preschool on their list.

I timed this program so that I would start school with my daughter starting K in the Fall. I need to go to school not worrying about who is watching the baby and I need quiet uninterrupted study time. The financial burden of daycare/prek can stop you in your tracks. Tell me moms are not at a disadvantage.

Yikes...I don't like any childcare program that doesn't let you walk in whenever you want :(
