i am going to finish my ADN RN in nov. 2013 , i already have a bachelors in biological sciences from FIU. my pre-req GPA is 3.85 my GPA for undergrad degree was 3.0. I spoke with the assistant dean for the MSN dept at UM. and she stated i can apply since i have my bachelors and as long as im an RN. BUT...she said the prefer candidates with exp. in acute care and PREFER RN BSN.

My question is has anyone applied to this program with a bachelors in a different field? what is your knowledge in the kind of applications they get. If i can go straight into the masters program and avoid spending money getting a bsn that would be great.

if you know of other schools in miami area that also accept candidates like me please let me know. I know getting exp. will be hard because getting a job as a nurse in miami i heard right now is super hard for nurses with no exp. so i dont even know how to start getting my foot in the door to get a job when i graduate to accumulate this exp.

any advice helps

Why don't you just chill and graduate first!!! And good for them for WANTING EXPERIENCED "NURSES" with BSN's What is the rush to do something you have no idea about??? Its more to it than about a GPA!!!!

with all do respect, the difference in actual nursing capability between ADN and RN is minimal, all BSN has extra is writing courses and lecture...second why would i pay for a BSN if there is a program that will allow me to obtain a higher degree with my existing bachelors ( even though it is not in nursing its still a science related field) , due to aweful job market in Florida i wish to be a step up on the competition as a masters degree will be better than a bachelors . Most new ADN grads cant find jobs so im not going to put myself through that trauma since there are so many willing BSN -RN willing to take 25 bucks an hour to pay bills.

also, i asked for advice from people who went this route for some advice on programs, my reasons for doing it are my own and i dont need a lecture from anyone.

also i know nurses with bsn's that are (insert curse word here) idiots

This is just my thinking, by reading your comment, as to why they want BSN's. They DO NOT desire 2nd career people who want to RUSH thru, in their programs, who have NO EXPERIENCE. I understand the BSN component.

As I stated before, CHILL and see if nursing is what you really want, sounds like to me you are still early on in school, if you are due to grad in 2013. You don't even know if you will be hired as a new nurse, because hospitals are seeking experience, which is the big complaints of new grads these days.

Sigh! Good luck and just graduate and pass the NCLEX

What I don't understand is, if you already have a Bachelors degree...why are you spending two years at a community college for an ADN, when you can apply to upper division programs at universities and spend the same amount of time getting a BSN....

I think so many people on this site just want everybody to know how "book smart" they are. I mean everybody have a 4.0 gpa, and want to jump to the highest nursing program and the top notch school (i know i am over kill here). Apparently the poster did not check into the accelerated programs. Or he/she did, but didn't get accepted into a BSN program, after applying to many, and got into an ADN program. With some things a 3.85 GPA does not matter!!! No Masters program will accept an ADN with a BS in a science related field. One has to have a BSN to go on for a MSN. Thats just the way it is, unless you go online to Nursing School :uhoh3: I bet they will "work with you" and take your money.

To address your incorrect assumptions I did in fact get accepted into accelerated programs and no not on online school . I chose not to pay 35000 to attend university of Miami accelerate Bsn program for financial reasons when my intent is to pursue higher degrees . I'm being smart and spending my hard earned money at Mdc which is only 8k and university of Miami does accept applicants for their msn programs if they have bachelor's in another field . I would rather take out that big loan for a masters than a bsn.

And from what I hear in Miami bsn rn are having equally as difficult a time getting jobs as adns. So yea experience is great if u can actually find a job . I would love to get a job right out of school regardless of the dept. So I can get the experience but the only ppl that have the real advantage is those that are working for years as rn . If a new grad Bsn applies for example a med surg position and an adn with 5 years of experience in that field applies to the same position the adn will most likely get that spot

I can see where you are coming from, but just make sure you make the right decision for you. I wanted to jump into an RN-MSN program, but have since decided to take it each level of education. There are more tracks for ARNPs when it is pursued this way--at least where I am looking to go.

Also, don't doubt your ability to impress unit managers. Experience is nice, but not always a must if someone sees something valuable in you. I'm a former medic in the Army, but with no combat experience. I just recently shadowed a very busy ER/level II trauma facility, and was offered a ft position...as a new grad. In another state. I relocate in a few weeks.
