  1. Looking to get some opinions ..im a licensed RN ADN currently in an RN to BSN program, now a residency ive been waiting for for months has finally opened and acording to recruiter you must either have a bsn or bsn or be enrolled, but the job description says for new bsn grads...unoffcially they are taking RN to BSN students, the problem is there is a question that states do you have BSN degree, which until the end of the year i wont have . but if i put no i know the system will throw my app in the trash since its selected as a requirement..unofficially i have it from the program recruiter that they will take RN to BSN students.. i cant reach her to ask what i should put...what do you think. if i put no, i know my app wont be seen, if i put yes i at least know it will be seen and on my resume it clearly states my expected graduation date so they can then make a decision based on that. thoughts...
  2. Cast net far and wide..not that's its helped me any I've applied to the following all within 100 mile radius from my house in Miami and never got any call back...I even walked on to the floors of the hospitals I had clinical a at and even with recommendations from nurses and directors they wouldn't take me with less than 6 no exp..no not even on med surf So here I go All major hospital chains in southern fl rehab facilities Hospice Nursing home Insurance companies Home health Camps ..u know like burn camps Med spa Dr office Occupational health jobs Va jobs The only 2 residencies that came out for any floor in 3 counties ..with tenet hospitals..hr won't return my calls either I've called in numerous favors..have recommendations..graduated top of my class..about to complete bsn and have a bachelors in biological science... All in all its very very very hard I'm sure your as frustrated as me after all these ppl are telling you the same bs ..and basically its the luck of the draw ..remember your one in probably 1000 or more apps for one job. Not even taking out extra certs helped me...like acls..pals..ECG and pharm. So all us new grads will keep going In thesame hamster wheel of...how can I get exp if entry level nursing jobs now req 1 yr in acute care..who's going to take a chance on the new grad..and I hate all these nurses that are like well you obviously aren't trying..these hospitals don't owe you anything..true but a hospital did give them a chance when they first got a job how can you prove your worth if your never even give the courtesy of a call these days... Sorry I hijacked your thread..a lot of frustration over here
  3. none anymore, used to be med surg but even they now are being picky cause they can... take what you can get where you can get it and dont worry about salary until your at least 1-2 years in.
  4. i notice alot of "filler" in your resume, a nurse is expected to know skin grafts , surgical wounds, ect ect an HR rep would expect that you know this as it is in your scope of practice so i would do away with those lines under your education explaining med surg ect ect... under professional profile do away with the second bullet point. in there you need to include certifications and specific skills for ex. CPR/BLS certifications ACLS/PALS/ECG/Pharm/Phelobotomy certs, are you bilingual if you are put that. leave the deans list and presidents list, but take out co captain of cheerleading club..it is not relevant and they wont care remember HR is getting hundreds to thousands of apps so looking at apps if they immediatly spot a bunch of "filler" and generic stuff like ( completing vitals, assessing patients, wound care) yours will prob hit the trash bin because EVERY nurse is expected to know this. they want to be able to skim quickly and see YOUR accomplishments and individual skills. i learned this the hard way after 3 HR reps tore apart my resume for the same "filler" sentences . As a new nurse they know you have zero experience so take out the certifications and the BSN that will help you stand out a bit more. make it easier on them to screen your resume. also remember clinical rotations isnt experience and they know this so i did see you kept it to the ortho rotation since thats what your interested in and thats ok but i would re write your last bullet points there and be more specific like what did you do with the skin graft, and what kind of surgical wounds you have experience dealing with ... just my $.02
  5. i completely agree to the use of an assessment that actually assess ones competency for the job that is being offered. Not one of these asked a math, reading, or comp literacy question. These were are strictly character assessments..and i even noticed that they asked the exact same question the exact same way on a different page .... You will never know the true character of someone behind a computer, that can only be guessed at in a face to face situation. Human resources has taken the HUMAN out of their job, they might as well automate the rest process and let the employee speak to a real human on day 1 of the job. I mean its gone from paper apps that you turn in in person and got the opportunity to use your personality to sell yourself to faxing apps, then email your apps, now apply online only ... pretty soon SKYNET will take over the entire process ( j/k some terminator humor). but really though i miss the days i could walk in to a place and charm them with my personality and brains not just sit back and be one of a million names in a pot the machine will choose from.
  6. This is a bit of a rant more than anything so here i go.... been applying to every job in miami dade county and surrounding ( broward, palm beach, collier....) every hospital now i have noticed is using a software called peopleanswers to screen applicants.... this takes at least a half hour to do and EVERY hospital is using it now ( minus jackson and one other i believe) Honestly what is the point , people will never answer these things completely honestly they will answer what they believe the employer is looking to hear. " why yes all my coworkers think im warm and nice" and " no i get along with everyone" . Like us new grads already dont have enough hoops to jump through , NCLEX was a breeze compare to this i feel like im in the hunger games or something each time im applying for a job competing with hundreds if not thousands others that also took out a BSN or are in the process and have all the nice certifications that cost an arm and a leg (ACLS,PALS, ect). This screening assessment is simply another tool for the hospitals to basically give us the finger and tell us we aren't worthy of working in their hospital..... rant over , now going to apply to the next 50+ med surg jobs no new grad is qualified for and save the auto reject letters to the pile of 100+ auto rejections i already have.
  7. Well, this is my first post in this section of allnurses..a bit discouraged..but i was well aware of the job market prior to even starting nursing school, i did nursing because i love it so im not going to let it get me too down..but just like everyone else here we all have bills to pay so that is the major stressor for me. Graduated this past Dec passed boards 1 week ago.. live in south florida..applied to 43 RN positions including but not limited to : Baptist ( homestead, kendall, mariners..ect ect) - Auto rejection emails daily sometimes within 10 min of applying to a position so i know no one looked at my resume/cover letter/ or reference letters Mt. Sinai Mercy Miami Children's ( possible hiring freeze) Hialeah hospital ( all tenet hospitals for that matter) Kendall Regional ( and all HCA hospitals) Cleveland Clinic Jackson Memorial Coral Gables Hospital VA ( no positions in VA miami for clinical RN) the list goes on ..im a military spouse but we never had to move from miami luckily we were both born and raised here( hes in coast guard) looked in usa jobs for RN positions in VA and there is only 1 in a prison..the other is only for officers that work in dept. of homeland security already so basically there are no openings at all in the VA Miami childrens seems to have some sort of hiring freeze because no new positions have been added in a while. every place wants exp. but i apply anyway, i have an ADN and a bachelors of science in biological sciences. i have reference letters and cover letters but it seems HR doesnt even read them. Ive had my resume reviewed by other nurses, professors, managers ect and they say my resume is great( except i have no paid nursing exp.) i can believe the rejection emails from positions i know im not qualified for but come on ... im getting turned down from med surg positions.....really.... i have gotten ACLS/PALS/EKG certs to add to my resume anyone know of anyplace willing to give a new grad a shot in south florida... ive applied in miami dade and broward county..i dont mind driving but obviously i cant move since my husband is stationed here. and as of right now there arent any residency positions open anywhere that i can find ( looked on indeed, monster, hospital webpages, ect)
  8. they said i could check glucose and eat snack during breaks, i schedules an afternoon exam time because during the morning my sugars tend to be low and they level out later in the day ...didnt wanna chance a low in the middle of the exam so im eating 30 min before exam to ensure my sugars are a little higher than i usually run , knowing myself i may not wanna take the break i just wanna get it over with
  9. I just wanted to post this for any other candidates who are type 1 diabetics like myself on insulin pumps. I am taking my examination in feb but wanted to triple check and make sure i could indeed have my insulin pump on me during my exam as that is potentially 6 hours i could be sitting there and i cant go 6 hours without insulin so .. i called my testing center in miami they said it was OK to have it and they will inspect it prior to beginning exam. Called Pearson VUE, they said to check with test center and NCSBN. So i called NCSBN and insulin pumps ARE ALLOWED. I heard some misinformation int his forum stating one candidate had to remove the insulin pump, that is very dangerous especially if your ulucky enough to sit the whole 6 hours. During breaks if you need to bolus for a snack its ok just let testing center staff know they will watch you. I personally will have all my snacks in a clear plastic bag out of the wrappers. As always just verify with you testing center in your location in advance but you can have it as it is essential.
  10. not sure from where in the US you are located but i know here in miami, all apps for the hospitals are via internet and they ask that you list all licenses and license numbers. therefore here i know its a waste of time/ effort applying before license is in hand. side note: Many hospitals will not hire or even interview unlicensed new grad for many reasons. The first being said graduate is not guaranteed to pass boards on first attempt. therefore can not begin position and there is so many licensed nurses looking for positions they wont bother to interview.
  11. take it, its hard enough getting jobs as a new grad with an adn ( i am a new grad with an ADN ) , waiting on auth to sit for boards. Anyhow, students from my program who graduated before me and are licensed had to move out of state to find jobs, only 2 out of 55 got jobs MUCH further than 50 miles from their house ( i live in miami, notoriously awful job situation ). Stick it out for at least a year and get that coveted experience and then look for a position closer to home. you have no idea how long it will be till you score another interview and get an offer, these are few and far between these days for people like us. If i were in your position i would do it.
  12. I completely agree with this post
  13. Ah yes the ADN vs BSN debate, i am also very sick of this argument but it is what it is. The fact is that many ADN's are upset because hospitals are now requiring BSN's for employment. We all know that BSN preferred actually means BSN required in 99% of cases. I am second degree nurse student i earned my Bachelors in Biological Sciences from FIU in 2011 with the intention of becoming a vet and decided after some personal situations that i wanted to go into nursing. I am attending Miami Dade Colleges ADN RN program and its fully paid for by a scholarship i won. It is a very well respected program in South Florida and many nurses that work in major hospitals down here like Jackson Memorial got their degrees at Miami Dade. ( Not to be confused with Dade Medical College which is a scam). I digress, anyways many ADN students are frustrated because we do the same clinicals, we take the very same NCLEX and we are no longer desirable for employment because we lack management courses. Lets not forget that the BSN was originally designed for nurses wishing to pursue management positions or NP ect ect. ADN's programs are tailored for bedside nursing. I am becoming a nurse to work in ICU but alas i will probably never have that opportunity with my ADN and Bachlors in Biological Sciences. Why? because the standard is now BSN for a bedside nurse job. i can enter the MSN program directly at Univeristy of Miami when im done with my ADN due to my other degree but what the point since they wont hire an FNP or acute care NP without experience so i will have to shell out more money for an RN to BSN program. I agree i dont think the OP was knocking BSN nurses but the hospital politics that govern hiring of BSNs and opposed to ADNs for bedside positions. Also i noticed many people on AN think its so easy to just move somewhere else, alot of people do not have the luxury of picking up and moving to other states for a job so we are stuck in a saturated market with a degree hospitals do not want and no way of obtaining those golden 1-2 years experience in a Critical Care setting. We all have bills to pay and cant afford to wait 4 years for a BSN to take boards and get a job, so many student choose the ADN route to get the license and start working and get experience in the field and make income to pay for that beloved BSN. I dont expect the hospitals to pay for furthuring my education ( those days i hear are long gone) i will pay for it myself but i need a nursing job to do it. anyways thats just my 2 cents
  14. no one has any advice??? id really appreciate it Thank you
  15. this particular orthopedic surgeon happens to be a friend of my husbands and heard i was in nursing school so he offered me an opportunity to volunteer some hours at his office if i want to after school
