i am starting the accelerated RN this august at MDC, and i have some questions for anyone else who's been in the program, is in the program, or in the generic.... lots of questions.....

do you wear those white tunics only to clinicals? what do you have to wear to the skills lab and health assessment class? scrubs or street clothes?

my insurance won't cover ANY of the labs/physical/TB test/immunizations....where did you go to get yours done?

have you heard anything about the instructors for the accelerated? are they the type to fail you if you breathe before opening your alcohol wipe instead of after, or are they out to help you succeed?

does MDC really not distribute the stafford loans until after school starts??? tuition is due july 22, but the financial aid office lady told me that stafford loans won't come out until the second week of september....eek! that means i'll have to come up with A LOT of money up front that i don't have.....

soooo many questions, i know!!! thanks in advance.

dazed and confused....

Hey Mortero. I only have one answer...sorry. With a 3.5 GPA you have an awesome chance of getting in. A lot of students get accepted with a 3.4. I am not sure on how many get accepted and how many apply, but a lot of people here may be able to help you with your questions.

Specializes in New Graduate Nurse.

Remember, when you calculate your GPA for acceptance into MDC's Nursing school. Not all of your classes count. Only the classes that count towards your AS in Nursing. So, you need to go to the MDC school of nursing web site and look at the list of prerequisites and class requirement for graduate. Use only those classes to calculate and you will have a better idea as to the GPA MDC will use for acceptance in to the nursing school.

I some of the people that apply and do not get accepted apply with a high overall GPA and a relativly low prerequisite GPA.

Good luck to all.

ok..thx for the feedback..i def. am going to the medical campus sometime this week to speak to them. I just thought that when i asked over the phone that they also look at your overall g.p.a being that you have a bachelors already, but thanks anyways my gpa should be in that area with only the prerequiste's.

Mortero,

I applied for both the accelerated and generic. Was accepted to both, chose generic. I'm not completely sure, but I don't think the bachelors GPA is taken into account. When I look at my MDC degree audit, I receive credit for taking all of my general education requirements due to my previous degree, but there is no grade listed for them. My MDC GPA is made up solely by the few pre-req classes I have taken at MDC. By the way my bachelors GPA is 3.0. My nursing school pre-req GPA is 4.0. I believe they only went by my nursing school pre-reqs. But definitely ask, just to be sure.

Thanks everyone for your responses! I am just going to sit back and wait to hear from MDC nursing school. I am also going to concentrate on my other classes that I am enrolled in for the School of Education. At least I have something to fall back on, even if it is not what I really want to do. =)

ymarti.........

What made u choose generic over AO?? I just applied for Spring 2009 but I only applied to the AO program. How much longer is the generic than the AO?? Do you think if I get accepted to the AO they might let me go to generic if I change my mind??

Hey KAD24....

I also applied to the AO program for Spring 09. I am anxiously waiting as I have heard many stories on the GPA thing. Are u a teacher cuz u said ur taking classes at the School of Ed??. I am a teacher and this is my last year before my temp certificate expires so I should also be at the School of Education taking 2 classes that I need. Hang in there!!!

I could have sworn it was overall GPA at least for classes taken in MDC, When I went to talk to a councelor from the campus she told me that it was overall. so now I am not even sure.

Tracie if you did not apply to both then you can not choose. I believe the generic is only one semester more. I can not imagine being in the Accelerated just because it is hard enough to pass the generic. It is a lot a lot of information. A lot of students have trouble with just the generic. Either way I believe that if you do have a bachelors you only have the choice of doing the Accelerated, but I would check that out first. Good luck!

If you have a bachelors you can apply to whichever program that you want. I originally was only going to apply for the Accelerated, because I mistakenly thought that the Generic was a two-year program. When I went to fill out the application I found out from an advisor that the Generic was only 4 months longer, and that I could apply to both programs at the same time. Acceptance into one does not depend on acceptance into the other. You could be accepted to both, neither, or just one. I felt that if I didn't make it into one of them, I could make it into the other. Luckily, I was accepted to both. Ultimately, I chose Generic over Accelerated because I heard that the Accelerated was soooo intense. I would much rather go at a slower pace in a program that is only one semester longer.

I did speak to a guy in one of my prerequisite classes that was in the Accelerated program. He said people were incredibly stressed out. In fact, he was in the process of switching over from the Accelerated to the Generic option. From what I heard, if there is space available in the Generic, then you can switch over from Accelerated to Generic. Keep in mind that Generic requires CHM 1033/1033L and Microbio & Lab, and DEP 2000, whereas the Accelerated does not.

.My undergrad degree is in Biology so I definitely have the pre req classes for generic. I didn't even realize it was four months longer cuz I would have definitely applied to both. How was he able to switch over and school has already begun??

Just a quick correction. Someone wrote that generic requires Micro Lab. It doesn't. It only requires Micro lecture.
