any uk nurses working in Florida?

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi!

I was wondering if there are any uk nurses who have qualified in the last 3 years who have managed to get to work in Florida? It would be great if you could let me know how you did it, also that your nursing transcript from your university fitted all the requirements that USA wanted. The reason I ask is I am on the new adult diploma course and although my tutors say I complete all the requirements for nursing in the uk, I wonder about for the US. I may get a placement with children, however I may not, this concerns me as I do I get the correct experience.Although I worked with children in Psychiatry as a staff nurse. I was an RMN before doing my conversion course.Anyway any helpful hints on travelling to work in the states would be appriciated. I am not sure wether its best to go through an agency or look myself by approaching hospitals in the states? look forward to hearing from a uk nurse thanks jules:)

I am going to sit the NCLEX exam in about a month and then hope to get job as a labor and delivery nurse in Florida. I am a midwife and an RN in UK. TRained to be nurse in Scotland (Project 2000). Transcripts were short of Paediatric and Psychiatric theory hours 20 hrs each discipline. Made up hours at local Uni. Would also have been short of Obstetric hours had I not done my midwifery training. I am going through O Grady Peyton agency. Paperwork and immigration bit of a nightmare if you dont know what u r doing. However my mum lives in Florida and loads of nursing jobs apparently....Good Luck

Good luck in your NCLEX...I just passed mine last month. Are you taking it in Orlando?

I am also going through Agency and the paperwork IS a nightmare!!!!!

There are loads of jobs - last I heard 10,000 nurses short in Florida.

Anyway Good luck!

I am taking exam in Georgia Atlanta. Apparently they process the paperwork much faster than Florida. They shall endorse my license so that I can work in Florida. Sat my pre flight test with O Grady Peyton today and got 81%. They tell me I should pass with this kind of score. Fingers crossed I dont get lots of unusual questions which I am not familiar with! Cant wait till exam over and I pass....will be so happy!

HI Thanks for reply!

yeah well I don't think I'm going t have 20 and 20 hours of paeds or maternity, I'm an RMN already so I've got psych component. Napier Uni where I'm studying in Edinburgh don't seem to be able to offer me these clinical hours I need so I'm thinking of approaching Dundee Uni and asking them. Can I ask what nursing uni did you study through in Scotland? What Uni did you appraoch to do your extra hours? and did you have to pay etc. That is my only problem I want to find out how to solve. Well done getting so far to sit Nclex, and good luck with exam.I so want to go to Florida too. As I'm studying just now I haven't quite decided what area I want to go into. look forward to hearing your info thanks jules:)

Hi thanks for your message. Also had a bit of a nightmare trying to sort out a University to facilitate me making up the hours that my transcripts fell short of. Eventually I got Thames Valley University in Ealing (London) to sort it out for me. The programme leader for Mental Health and the Programme Leader for Child Health were the people who sorted it out. I went and met up with them and we scheduled a timetable where I would sit in on lectures with pre-registration nursing students. I had a register with the classes on and length of time of classes and I got the tutors to sign to confirm my attendance. Once I made up all the hours i got proof to say I had completed the required hours on official headed Uni paper. The child health lecturer made me a proper certificate and the mental health tutor wrote me a letter. Either way both seem to be acceptable. I did my midwifery training at TVU so I think thats why they helped me out in the end. I did not have to pay - just got them box of biscuits as a thank you! Some girls going through O Grady Peyton have said they made up the hours by doing essay at home which was then 'marked' by Uni lecturer. There does not seem to be any clear guidelines on how you make these hours up. I trained to be a nurse at University of Paisley the Ayr campus. Hope this helps......Sarah:rolleyes:

Thanks for that info, yeah I think I am going to have to do some serious begging, even at my uni. I may just approach the midwifery section and child head and do it that way asI am covering all the theory, we're just not getting the 20 and 20 clinical experince. I mean it's only 4 weeks in total! not alot really to do extra.I may be getting a 'health visiting' placement for 4 weeks I wonder if that would cover child and maternity? what do u think, they deal with baby's and children do they not! Even requesting that placement instead of district nurse placement is proving difficult. It seems places are so few, espescially for adult nurses. Anyway, I am going to plod on, alrady I am looking at NCLEX stuf, loads to learn but worth it, can't wait to go to FLorida!!!:) thanks, if u can let e know if u think health visiting placement might cover it please let me know thanks jules

Dont honestly know if a health visiting placement would cover the hours. They are asking for obstetric hours so I have a feeling it may not do! If anyone knows of any official guidelines for facilitating making up of hours if your transcripts fall short please let us know!

Thanks, yeah I wondered that too, I will ask the nursing agency what they think. It's difficult as I know health visitors deal with ne born baby's and possibly toddlers, oh who knows.I will plod on.Good luck with your immigration etc.jules
